[Bug 408733] New: Check the process for boot loader restoration
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=408733 User Markus.Elfring@web.de added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=408733#c357290 Summary: Check the process for boot loader restoration Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Markus.Elfring@web.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- I installed the current software "GParted 0.3.8" yesterday. http://packman.links2linux.de/package/gparted/66366 Today I have dared to resize my boot partition with this tool. Unfortunately, I have got the display "GRUB " after reboot. It seems that the boot loader does not like the adjusted disk layout. I wonder why it has got problems to find its configuration file "menu.lst" after the space adjustment. I booted from a DVD then. http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/iso/dvd/openSUSE-11.0-DVD-x86... 1. I have chosen to start an update. I was pointed to the rescue system as an alternative a step later which I chose. I have selected minimum options. It was reported that an error occurred during boot loader installation. (The message did not tell any more details!) 2. I have selected the option "Repair installed system" from the main boot menu where I have started the action "Restore GRUB" from the expert tools section. It was reported that the boot loader could not be installed because the root directory could not be found. (Do you support a "/" here that is contained in a LVM2 setup?) 3. I have chosen to perform a (complete) update. I was presented the same questionable error message as in 1. at the end after I went all through the hassle of long waiting for dependency and conflict resolution. I booted from another DVD. ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/DVD/KNOPPIX_V5.3.1DVD-2008-03-26-DE.iso root@Knoppix:~# e2fsck /dev/sda2 e2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008) /dev/sda2: clean, 103/28224 files, 96561/112452 blocks root@Knoppix:~# mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/B root@Knoppix:~# e2fsck /mnt/B e2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008) e2fsck: Is a directory while trying to open /mnt/B The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> It seems that an other approach for a GRUB restore will be needed like it is described in the article "http://grub.enbug.org/grub-install" or the issue "'yast2 bootloader' module rewrites grub generic code when leaving with no changes, which may corrupt grub" (bug #357290). The protocol files became too big (> 10 MB) to append them for this bug report in an attachment. root@Knoppix:~# cd /mnt/H/elfring/Projekte/YaST/ && tar -cjf broken_GRUB.tbz /mnt/V/log/YaST2 && du -h broken_GRUB.tbz 31M broken_GRUB.tbz -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately, I have got the display "GRUB " after reboot. It seems that the boot loader does not like the adjusted disk layout.
I would like to add that an explanation for my observation can be found in the position handling: The GRUB MBR (being the GRand Unified Boot Loader's "stage1" Sector) A Disk Editor View and Comments on the Code (as seen in Memory during Execution) http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/asm/mbr/GRUB.htm I hope that it will become easier to move boot partitions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The "second attempt" was only possible after I activated my LVM configuration manually.
I know.
When will this step be performed automatically?
After the fix of bug 402654.
Are you also looking for directories besides "usr"? Which mount points should be available for the repair?
Currently, repair mounts only / and that seems to be problem, because the libraries are located under /usr, that's probably why the bootloader repair failed. The following command worked in the console after the root partition could not be found by the repair system from the DVD. / #> ll /usr/lib* [Usual directory listing ...]
Hm, the question is if this is the same /usr as the one on your LVM partition. Try this: boot repair dvd, start LVM manualy, just like youv've done before, let YaST mount /dev/system/root and see (on console) where is it mounted. I assume it will be /mnt. Than mount your /dev/system/usr to /mnt/usr.
Would you like to reproduce my error situation in your own test environment?
Well, I'm not sure if I have time for building such environment. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Markus, do you have still problem with restoring bootloader in Repiar mode?
I do not know because my issue with the boot menu was repaired somehow by the usual update to 11.1 from the installation DVD.
Your comment #33 is iteresting but for different problem could be different bug report ;-)
I used the "splashimage" setting for the display of an eye-candy background image as a workaround. Now I like the display of the winter from the penguin theme. I guess that a separate report for a potentially unsupported key word in the configuration might not be appropriate for my current situation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
