[Bug 347156] New: gcc not distributed in the base media
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=347156 Summary: gcc not distributed in the base media Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rlx_01@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer gcc not distributed in the base media This is a very odd decision and a major problem. I will not be using SuSE again since I need to compile drivers as one of the first things after an installation. I have better things to do than chase down missing basic components just to get a normal system working. I am now using Ubuntu and will probably stick with it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

dare to explain why it's needed? Where do you get these drivers from if not from the net? And if you have net, why can't you download gcc?
my concern is not with drivers, the 1-CD install is minimal by design, and leaves so much to be desired, there are many apps that users may prefer that are not necessarily included in the 1-CD media. from my experience, most advanced users compile their favourite apps first thing after installing a new system, and we shouldn't assume that they all have a fast Internet access or would rather use the distro's repositories. even windows gives you that much freedom. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

sorry, but you're talking nonsense. gcc is by far not the only needed package to compile anything.
actually gcc+make is all i need to compile most of my favourite programs. if i'm going to keep a piece software on my disk, i might as well have its dependencies too, don't you think? and i'm just speaking for myself here.
- we have 30.000 packages in the build service for you to install software
well, that's good, but unless we're half-way between releases many rpm's are either outdated, missing dependencies, badly compiled or only available in 3rd party repos (if at all)
- you need tons of devel stuff in addition to a C-compiler to compile software
as i said, that is easily avoidable, since most users who like to compile their own software are likely to have their dependencies too, they don't really need all the "devel stuff"
- schools in 3rd world countries should download one DVD and setup a NFS/FTP/HTTP server
so they can't afford a fast internet access, but can afford buying a server? i fail to see the logic in that! please reconsider your decision to close this bug. last time i checked gcc and make don't take that much space and can easily be included in the 1-cd media. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
