[Bug 911575] New: poor IPv6-geolocation in mirrorbrain / download.o.o
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=911575 Bug ID: 911575 Summary: poor IPv6-geolocation in mirrorbrain / download.o.o Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Download Infrastructure Assignee: lrupp@suse.com Reporter: bwiedemann@suse.com QA Contact: lrupp@suse.com CC: adrian@suse.com, hvogel@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- When I run osc build on my workstation, the slowest part is the downloads of rpms with speeds varying between 5kB/s (very bad) and 500kB/s (slow but OKish). This might be due to mirrorbrain poorly handling our new IPv6 addrs curl http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.1/repo/non-oss/suse/noarch/john...

so it will probably randomly pick mirrors anywhere on the world and most of the download time is spent on slow mirrors -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am not doing osc builds. But I see it when downloading an iso, and I see surprisingly slow update downloading. It isn't a big problem for downloading an iso. I use the meta link. The download starts slowly, but aria2c quickly finds faster sources. The IPv4 location is a few miles off, but close enough for mirrorbrain. Other sites that try to locate me with IPv6 are a bit off, but still in the correct continent. They sometimes put me in Wisconsin (instead of Illinois), or in Richardson, Texas (the main office of the ISP). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, I see this.
I am not doing osc builds. But I see it when downloading an iso, and I see surprisingly slow update downloading.
It isn't a big problem for downloading an iso. I use the meta link. The download starts slowly, but aria2c quickly finds faster sources.
I rarely have reason to download an ISO, but network installs become quite an issue when installing from a Bangladeshi mirror (to Switzerland) :-) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=911575 --- Comment #3 from Bernhard Wiedemann <bwiedemann@suse.com> --- http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/geoip2/geolite2/ has DBs that include IPv6 locations even though it lists 2620:113:8000::/40 as US it would probably still be an improvement and maybe we could even add extra entries for our internal IPv6 addrs -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=911575 --- Comment #5 from Per Jessen <per@computer.org> --- I've also only just this weekend come across two postings that suggest mirrorbrain ipv6 geoloc isn't working at all - unless the patches proposed were applied and ipv6 geoloc information added to the database: http://mirrorbrain.org/archive/mirrorbrain/0221.html http://mirrorbrain.org/archive/mirrorbrain/0227.html -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

As a workaround, I've established a local mirror for use by IPv6 clients. It's not much work. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
