While I do have sound, I get a loud click or pop at the beginning and end of the sound clip or mp3. During the playing, there is a rather pronounced, high-pitched 'whistle' or tone. If I change the volume from within Realplayer, instantly, ALL sound ceases even though the player continues with no apparant error and the song/clip appears to end normally, albeit silently. The only way to restore sound is to attempt (as root or within Yast) I try to add *any* other sound card, which always fails with an error but always restores the sound when I abort the program after acknowledging the error. Restarting the card, adjusting the volume or any other function from within Yast has no effect, only the attempted addition/configuration of another card and allowing it to do it's attempt to quick-config induce the error will fix it. I have also attempted to install the latest 10.2 patches from Nvidia via the rpm mirror from opensuse. If anything, the 'whistle' is much worse. There appears to be an interaction between KMIX and any other volume adjustment. If I remove KMIX, I can change volume using Amarock, but xmms still causes the silence, resettable only by forcing an error by adding a non-existant card and attempting to initialize it, then aborting after the error is reported. Then the sound returns....either that or rebooting. The whistle is totally gone as are virtually all of the clicks and pops when the sound bytes start and stop. The interaction between sound apps and KMIX are greatly improved as well in that changing volume from within the apps, Amrock, XMMS, Xine (video) and RealPlayer/Mplayer all work as they should. What doesn't work as expected is the volume on the Panel at the bottom on Kmix icon. It now shows a phone plug icon when expanded and when the slider moves, the sound does not change. Selecting the mixer area and moving the PCM OR the Phono both affect the volume of Xmms (didn't test the others again). Then when I was about to say it works well enough, I went back to XMMS while the mixer was still showing and tried again to make changes between the two and again, SILENCE, resettable only by going in and editing from within YAST and restarting the sound system as noted earlier. All in all, this is a VAST IMPROVEMENT, but still has a gotcha lurking and does not work as it used to (and still does) on my other machines under 10.2 with other motherboards. Definitely the right track though. On the ASUS machine running the MCP51 driver, this is NOT the case. Moving the Xmms slider changes the volume but does NOT move the KMIX slider. Moving the KMIX slider DOES change the volume, but does NOT change the XMMS slider like it does on the other machines. The link between the programs is broken. Further testing with the silence 'feature' shows the silence mode can be induced by attempting to move the HEADPHONE slider in KMIX and instantly the sound goes away with no ability to reset it without going through YAST and restarting the sound system as noted previously. As this does NOT happen in 10.2 on the snd_via82xx driver I believe the driver is at fault although KMIX may also have a fault but the sound problem existed in 10.2 and was greatly changed by loading the 10.3A5 kernel and drivers. I loaded 10.3A5 on one of the non malfunctioning 10.2 machines with NO change whatsoever leading me to believe that the driver is the primary difference albeit, KMIX could be a contributer.
