[Bug 766317] New: Snapper is enabled by default in 12.2 and fills up the whole hard disk
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=766317 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=766317#c0 Summary: Snapper is enabled by default in 12.2 and fills up the whole hard disk Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Factory Platform: All OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: thardeck@suse.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: Development Blocker: --- If you use btrfs in openSUSE 12.2 Snapper is enabled by default. This leads after a short time to a root partition without any space unless root has probably more than 20 GB or something which is uncommon I suppose. I tried to disable snapper but was only able to do so for Yast and the cron job but not for zypper. I think there are three possibilities: 1. There should be an option to disable snapper during installation and a warning if root hasn't enough space for the usual snapshot ammount. 2. Snapper will be disabled by default in 12.2. 3. Bnc#740574 is fixed before release and snapper is able to clean up before it runs out of space but this is unlikely I suppose. Otherwise people who are no experts would run out of space soon and basically have an unusuable system after a short time depending on their root partition size. Of course this would only happen if btrfs is selected during installation but since there is no warning it will be not uncommon I suppose. The other problem is that snapshots of root aren't that big if you have a stable distribution but if you use Factory, early Milestones or Tumbleweed the size requirement could increase substantially. If you use the automatic partitioning with btrfs the root partition is already 20 GB but since not everybody can or wants to use this feature I would still suggest to integrate a warning if a btrfs root has less than 20 GB. Maybe the cron job of snapper can monitor the size of the root partition and if it goes below a certain limit, like 1 GB or similar, it starts to delete old snapshots. If this behavior is documented this shouldn't be a problem I think and snapshots on the same hard disk as the original should never be the only backup option. Besides that it would be great if there could be a Yast option or one configuration file change where you can dis/enable snapper globally. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
