diskspace on all mirrors.
40GB or more for just 10.2 debuginfos
It is interesting to consider that _14_ mirrors (that I know of) _have_ the capacity to host 30 GB of drpmsync data for Factory, even though it is almost certainly useless for them, because they don't run a drpmsync server. (By the way, we could think about better usage of those 30 GB on our own server, too. They are accessed only by 5-15 client machines per day.) This is a waste of space on our mirrors. I am currently working to stop them mirroring of this content (unless a mirror consciously decides to do so, of course). (The primary reason why _I_ want to get rid of those is because the extreme number of files blows up the rsync load and mirror database, for no good reason.) Furthermore, I wouldn't necessarily assume that debuginfo packages _need_ to be on a mirror. Depending on customer interest, it may not required redirection to mirrors at all. Anyway, if the content is out of tree and put in a separate rsync module, mirrors will need to consciously decide whether to mirror that stuff. The point is: with things lke drpmsync, factory builds, and buildservice repositories, we already _have_ the situation that mirrors do not simply mirror our entire server, but only selected parts they choose. In fact, extra stuff like debuginfos doesn't need to be on download.o.o at all, because it doesn't need the same kind of high availability as other content hosted there. Technically, it is also possible to restrict the bandwidth used for debuginfo downloads, even if hosted on the same server. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'd be fine with a bandwidth limited connection to the debuginfo packages for security releases as I could have my machine pull these in the off hours and it wouldn't be in my way. I notice that I can get the source RPMs for all of the security patches, which will automatically build the debuginfo packages. Perhaps another solution would be for the update mechanism to automatically build the debuginfo packages on the client side? Although I suspect it's much more cost effective to just put the already built updates on the server rather than trying to write a whole new app to do something that's already being built, just not made available. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will add it to my discussions with people. Size, bandwith is one of the reasons we do not deliver debuginfo packages currently. Currently our package do not contain any debug information, this reduces size. The debuginfo packages contain not only information what we hat before in binary packages but also the source. I am currently investigating if/how to change our setup for debuginfos so that we have all needed information in debuginfo packages and could reduce them in size. This will not only hit openSUSE but all of our products, this makes it more complex to match all needs and constraints. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do you count every package update or only the last update of a package? Other question: Do we need to host debuginfo packages forever? I suppose we could remove them as soon as the next product is released. This would make room for debuginfos of current software, which are going to be requested much more frequently. For instance, could we remove 10.0 and 10.1 now? Or would this invalidate metadata? If so, I suggest to handle debuginfo packages separately so they can be removed earlier than the rest. This problem is one that the team would like to try to resolve. One of the issues here is that when a package is upgraded via the update channel for security reasons (ie a mandatory update), the debuginfo package is not updated. We then have a dependency issue. In my case, at the time it was GTK 2.10.6.24(patched)from GTK 2.10.6.13 and there was a YAST dependency issue with the debuginfo package gtk2-debuginfo. Echoing Coolo..A channel to obtain the latest updates of debug packages would probably fix the problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From the view of mirror feeding, I am strongly opposed to adding more

Especially large ones. The rsync modules on {stage,rsync}.opensuse.org (which the mirrors depend on) are an increasing mess. What typically happens (resp. happened in the past) is that we added new content right into the trees which mirrors pull their copies from. Some examples: - the existing debuginfo packages. The 10.3 debuginfo for instance comprises 24 GB of 51 GB repo size, but they are hardly ever downloaded. It doesn't make sense to occupy 24 GB of space on mirrors with files which are hardly ever downloaded. To give you some perspective: yesterday's log (a typical day) shows 1.896.276 downloads for rpm files 4.028 downloads for rpm debuginfo files which is a ridiculously small number. Likely no mirror needed at all. It's sufficient if those files are on download.opensuse.org. - the drpmsync tree (30 GB wasted on mirrors). Mirrors were mirroring this tree even though they didn't know about it, because it was "hidden" in the Factory directory. There were more mirrors than active downloaders of the tree (5)! - the 10.3-test update tree (12 GB wasted on mirrors). This tree is for testing and surely doesn't need to be mirrored. (But it was mirrored until recently, because it was added without considering mirroring.) I'm sure we could have a lot more mirrors, if we wouldn't waste so much of their disk space anymore. Mirrors that don't even consider mirroring us because of the required disk space, mirrors that have too bad international connectivity to mirror hundreds of gigs, ... In addition, we have a load problem on our rsync servers, which is largely caused by those proliferated trees. Configured rsync excludes are not a real solution to this, because they don't make the tree smaller which the origin server (download.opensuse.org) has to stat. For instance, it takes over half an hour meanwhile just to find out that /repositories has no new files (full sync over the tree, even omitting all repoview files). drpmsync is another example, as the extreme number of files (200.000) takes insane amounts of time to rsync (try du -sc on the directory). Therefore, I strongly suggest to put extra stuff like debuginfos in separate trees from now on. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok, then to make it clear, YES I want debuginfo packages for updated packages for 11.0 AND any future releases that are made. This bug was initially put in against 10.2, because that was the latest version of opensuse at the time. Then it didn't get done for 10.3, so we moved it forward to 10.3. The irony of course is that the most buggy packages, that most need debuginfo, are (of course) the packages that also get updates that mean there is no debuginfo ;-) Looking forward to this going live. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks Rudi for already implementing the update debuginfos. I have adjusted all rsync modules. Two mirrors will mirror the debuginfos for now. The debuginfo install source for 11.0 updates is available at: http://download.opensuse.org/debug/update/11.0/ *however* it'll work reliably only in a few days. A mirror clean up needs to be awaited first, because the debug tree accidentally ended up on mirrors lately. Until then, http://widehat.opensuse.org/debug/update/11.0/ may be used. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The content appears to be rather incomplete to me, eg no debuginfo for any released KDE4 update package. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Rudi setup build system to release also debuginfo for ALL packages end of July (July 28th is the timestamp of the oldest). Hence I would say this bug is fixed besides mirror adjustments. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
