[Bug 625329] New: Kernel Mode Setting for NVidia with Xorg-nv causes OS to become unusable
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=625329 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=625329#c0 Summary: Kernel Mode Setting for NVidia with Xorg-nv causes OS to become unusable Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kamikazow@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux; de-DE) AppleWebKit/532.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) rekonq Safari/532.4 openSUSE 11.3 uses Nouveau's kernel DRM driver, but defaults to Xorg's nv driver. This causes massive problems once KMS is actually used, for example when switching to another screen (Ctrl-Alt-F1) after Xorg started up. The screen only shows garbage. The only way out is to reboot, potentially causing data loss if an important document is unsaved. Booting into Failsave does not help, because the "nomodeset" parameter is not set by default. Must-have consequence: "nomodeset" has to be added as Failsave parameter to Grub. Possible solutions for non-Failsave boot: 1.) Disable KMS for all NVidia hardware. (Would also fix Bug 615733) 2.) Install xorg-nouveau by default and also use it. 3.) Do 1. & 2.
