[Bug 349165] New: xauth shouldn't be in xorg-x11 package
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=349165 Summary: xauth shouldn't be in xorg-x11 package Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: bj@sernet.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- I think we had this issue some years ago... xauth is needed for systems which are remote only accessed machines where no X11 server is required but X11 ssh forwarding is used with xauth. For that reason xauth should - either move to the xorg-x11-libs package - or move into a separate package -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

- either move to the xorg-x11-libs package
Due to the modular buildsystem we now have this would make the build of xorg-x11-libs rather complicated.
- or move into a separate package
What's the benefit? You still need to install this package manually since you
can't do a "Requires:

The manual selection could be prevented by an RPM requires on xauth in the xorg-x11-libs package though but I don't like that idea too much. I already explained that exactly this is *not* possible.
The xorg-x11 (server) package should of course require xauth via RPM. Sure.
Question is, how important is it to save some space on a dedicated application server, which doesn't need any standard tools. Coolo, is this worth the effort? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There is no Xserver + deps in the xorg-x11 package. A seperated xauth package would save some space, but that's it.
Xserver IS xorg-x11 and the deps I was speaking of are the long list of "rpm -qR xorg-x11". Sorry if I didn't say that clear enough.
I already explained that exactly this is *not* possible.
how does a "Requires: xorg-x11-xauth" for xorx-x11-libs introduce a loop while this is an installation dependency not a build dependency? All major distributions have xauth in separate packages to not force the users to install xorg-x11 plus `rpm -qR xorg-x11`. And there are also setups in the real world where the installation (even if disabled) of an X server is a no-go for securitry or policy reasons. Less space is not the only reason. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Xserver IS xorg-x11 You're wrong. There is no Xserver in this package. Even no virtual one like Xnest, Xephyr, Xvfb, Xvnc.
and the deps I was speaking of are the long list of "rpm -qR xorg-x11". Sorry if I didn't say that clear enough.
Well, I find the standard X11 applications *very* useful. Others do as well.

I tried to explain this to you in a seperate email.
All major distributions have xauth in separate packages to not force the users to install xorg-x11 plus `rpm -qR xorg-x11`.
Some just use one package for each X.Org application (which are in git app directory). We don't.
And there are also setups in the real world where the installation (even if disabled) of an X server is a no-go for securitry or policy reasons.
See above.
Less space is not the only reason.
Currently I don't see another reason. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

-- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
