[Bug 244453] New: UpGrade to grub2
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244453 Summary: UpGrade to grub2 Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dominique.leuenberger@tmf-group.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I think we should try the step away from GRUB and have a look in GRUB2. GRUB is no longer actively developed, but GRUB2 as it's successor is maintained. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

We'll reconsider grub2 only after: 1st: grub-1.0 was released, plus maybe some more updates. 2nd: grub2 has all the necessary dirty workarounds for buggy BIOSes that grub1 collected over the years 3rd: grub2 poses any advantages over grub1 (well, maybe 2 out of three will do ;-) Then it would be appropriate to file a feature entry in FATE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244453 ------- Comment #2 from dominique.leuenberger@tmf-group.com 2007-02-11 05:20 MST ------- #1 will most likely never happen, as GRUB Legacy (former Grub1) is not actively developped anymore #2 That's a point. Do you happen to know what's missing? #3 There are already advantages: easy scriptable, EFI support (native), proper chainloading, cleaner code thus more maintainable. Don't expect any new features in GRUB Legacy :-) For FATE: I'm note sure.. but is this public available? I think there were many discussions about this on the ML already. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244453 duwe@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|RESOLVED |REOPENED Resolution|LATER | ------- Comment #3 from duwe@novell.com 2007-03-02 03:19 MST ------- #1 is not entirely true. grub1 currently still lives on as trusted grub. #2 is a problem that you only know what's missing when it's gone. Being responsible for that area, I'm afraid many real customer machines will not boot with grub2. There's dozens to maybe hundreds of small workarounds and quirks in grub. Not all are marked as such. #3 our scripting is done one layer above, in the gfxboot, which works with grub*, lilo and syslinux/isolinux alike. I'll not comment on EFI, but cleaner code is always a good thing. For new features: free and open source software is just great. New projects can fork from old ones, see #1. I write this because the grub2 question will likely be asked more frequently. This needs to be turned into an entry in the separate feature system, FATE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
