[Bug 344492] New: ghostscript generates PDF files containing no indexeable or searcheable text
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=344492 Summary: ghostscript generates PDF files containing no indexeable or searcheable text Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: scarfoglio@arpacoop.it QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: Customer In openSuSE 10.3 PDF files are not indexed by Beagle because no text is contained within. You can try with Beagle's text extraction tool or Midnight Commander viewer. For this reason they cannot be searched for text either. Compiling and installing Ghostscript from source (8.6.1) fixes the problem. This occurs in the 32 bit version too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=344492#c1 Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |werner@novell.com Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED --- Comment #1 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2007-11-28 01:55:15 MST --- openSUSE 10.3 includes Ghostscript version 8.15. Did you really use an old Ghostscript version 8.6 or do you mean e.g. Ghostscript version 8.60? I guess you mean Ghostscript version 8.60. I assume Ghostscript version 8.15 just has no support for indexeable or searcheable text in PDFs so that the issue is no bug in Ghostscript version 8.15 but an enhancement request (i.e. upgrade to Ghostscript version 8.60) for the next openSUSE version. As the next openSUSE version will have Ghostscript version 8.60 or later, the issue should be already fixed. By the way, for our current Ghostscript, have a look at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/WernerFink/ e.g. in your particular case (openSUSE 10.3 on 64-bit AMD) see http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/WernerFink/openSUSE_10.3/x86... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=344492#c2 --- Comment #2 from Carlo Scarfoglio <scarfoglio@arpacoop.it> 2007-11-28 13:10:11 MST --- Yes, I meant ghostscript 8.60, not 8.6. But,I wouldn't call it a enhancement request, because it is a bug present in openSuSE 10.2 too, which used version 8.15, since about summer 2006. A patch broke ghostscript, that started creating PDFs with non-standard font vectors. Who or what is to blame does not matter now, because your version works correctly. But, please, advise users to upgrade because Beagle, Google desktop and any tool for indexing or searching for text in files skip PDF files generated by kprinter through ghostscript.
