[Bug 485014] New: After February kernel update, s2disk fails to power-off the system.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485014 User robin.listas@telefonica.net added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485014#c1 Summary: After February kernel update, s2disk fails to power-off the system. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: robin.listas@telefonica.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009012700 SUSE/3.0.6-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.6 After February kernel update, s2disk fails to power-off the system. System proceeds with s2disk as usual, but on the last moment it fails to power off the machine. The error message, hand copied, is: s2disk: saving 89482 image data pages [...] done S| s2disk: Could not enter the hibernation state, calling power_off. Reason: input/ouput error. After this, I have to pull the power. When I power on the machine, it thaws correctly. Notice that I have always got that error message (which is not saved to any log; I have a photo if you want it), but the machine powered off normally before the last update. And it does work in 11.0 minas-morgul:~ # cat /proc/version Linux version 2.6.27.19-3.2-debug (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.3.2 [gcc-4_3-branch revision 141291] (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP 2009-02-25 15:40:44 +0100 Ask for any log or data you may need. For me, this bug is a blocker, as it impedes my upgrading to 11.1: I routinely hibernate the machine daily, and my UPS setup relies on hibernating the machine. A device driver failing to suspend comes to mind. However, a console log would be necessary to identify it.
Can I get that console log for you somehow? I have the splash screen disabled, so that suspend messages do display in the screen, but they do not log to file. I made a photo with my mobile phone, maybe you'd like that? Quality is not good, but I don't have anything else. In case you are thinking of attaching a serial console to the kernel to dump messages there, that will not work: Bug 472861 For clarification: machine does hibernate. What doesn't work is the final power off. The machine is effectively dumped to disk and "halted", but "on". I pull the power, then switch on, and it comes back correctly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That depends on what ports are there in the box.

Well, too bad.

That's exactly what I thought. Do you have any experience with building the kernel from sources? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

ethernet, usb, and rs232. But the auxiliary computer is old and doesn't have usb.
Do you have any experience with building the kernel from sources?
From your kernel-sources rpm, yes, I can. It takes several hours to compile, tough, this machine is not fast.

Machine remains powered, and I have to hit the power switch. When I power it up it restores normally to the previous, saved state. Ie, no difference to the initial report. Notes: In the case of init=/bin/bash, there are three details to add to the instructions the next time: * Keyboard configuration is not done, ie, I get an US keyboard layout, which is a problem as my keyboard is Spanish. Ie, the instructions need an entry for changing keyboard layout * "Grub magic" is not done, so the user has to remember to boot the same kernel option as previous time (dangerous! I have dozens of entries). * halting the machine (^D) gave a panic, flashing simultaneously scroll lock and caps lock: (none):/>exit kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Entering kbd (current=0xf745cfo, pid 1) on procesor 0 Oops:<NULL> due to oops@0x0 kbda_dumpregs: pt_regs not available, use bt* or pid to select a different task [0]kbd> It seemed that it accepted commands and gave errors, but I did not understand what it said. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
