https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672059 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672059#c0 Summary: sane-backends: late version upgrade for 11.4 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: All OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEEDINFO Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: jsmeix@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de InfoProvider: coolo@novell.com Found By: Development Blocker: --- A new sane-backends 1.0.22 version was released right now, see http://www.sane-project.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2011-02-13: SANE-Backends-1.0.22 has been released. Changes since 1.0.21: * New backends: kvs20xx (Panasonic KV-S20xx), magicolor (Konica-Minolta). * Significant enhancements to several backends. * More than 80 new scanner models supported. * Support many more networked scanners. * Added -A option to scanimage. * Improved build system. * Improved USB support. * Improved udev rules. * Documentation updates. * Bugfixes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Should I start to work on a sane-backends 1.0.22 version upgrade for openSUSE 11.4? Right now I did not do any work for sane-backends 1.0.22. In particular I did not test it. I only need the information whether or not you may accept a sane-backends 1.0.22 version upgrade at all now provided it works at least for me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672059 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672059#c5 --- Comment #5 from ray herman <rh@eng-int.co.uk> 2011-02-24 05:15:40 GMT --- Thanks for the 1.0.22 packages. I am using then with openSuSE-11.3 and openSuSE-Factory build 1096 KDE x86_64 and Canoscan Lide 110. But (there's always a "but"). Sane requires rw permissions to the device, otherwise e.g. Skanlite reports "Sorry. No devices found". /etc/udev/rules.d/55-libsane.rules (from sane-backends) entries contain 'MODE="0664", GROUP="lp",' which limits access to root and members of "lp". I have added all members of users to "lp" and modified the default user groups. However upgrading from 11.3 to Factory removed users from "lp" again. Perhaps the device group should be set to "users", anyhow the current situation is annoying. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672059 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672059#c6 --- Comment #6 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@novell.com> 2011-02-24 08:39:19 UTC --- The access issue in comment #5 is not new but exists "since ever". Feel free to change the udev rules according to your needs in your particular case but by default out-of-the-box we cannot set it to "users" because of security reasons. Furthermore for all-in-one devices (printer + scanner) it must be "lp" because otherwise the CUPS backend could not access the device for printing. As I'm facing difficulties with configuring scanners all over the years, there should be a solution for Suse-11.4. Presently I get the following error from a script calling scanimage process 2869: arguments to dbus_connection_send() were incorrect, assertion "connection != NULL" failed in file dbus-connection.c line 3294.
