Here's my case, using opensuse 10.3, asus P4PE motherboard, 2.4GHz P4, 1 GiB
RAM: the printer works fine without any option passed to parport_pc
(parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7, dma
3[PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP,DMA]), until the module is reloaded. After that,
any access to /dev/lp0 hangs, regardless of passing dma=none (I added
the line "options parport_pc dma=none" to /etc/modprobe.conf.local). I got this
once:

The BIOS setting is EPP/ECP mode, the IO chip is a Winbond one, EFER=0x2e
key=0x87 devid=87 devrev=08 oldid=00 type=unknown.
This is irritating as both yast and the vmware configuration script cause
parport_pc to be reloaded.
