(See posts 37 and 60) Using rescue mode and installing grub manually worked - though only when installed to MBR (hd0) and to to the the root partition (sd0,1) - which was a bit weird. It typically leads to an incomplete boot setup. Also, the missing user setup Pete reported points into that direction. I installed 12.1 on a separate partition without installing a bootloader and then manually entered 12.1 in the menu.lst file for my 11.4 system. After testing 12.1 and getting it the way I wanted it I installed the bootloader in 12.1 to boot from root partition.
