[Bug 722988] New: System unbootable, grub not installed when 'boot from /boot partition' is enabled
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722988 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722988#c0 Summary: System unbootable, grub not installed when 'boot from /boot partition' is enabled Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: iceman@fastmail.com.au QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 I tried installing 12.1 beta1 to a USB hard disk. After the installation finished it asked me to reboot the machine but I just got a blank screen with a blinking cursor on reboot. I had to boot off a LiveCD and manually install grub to the USB hard disk to get it working with "root (hd2,0)", "setup (hd2)" at the grub command line, where hd2 is my USB hard disk. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Start the installation from the KDE image on a USB stick, installing to a USB hard drive. 2.In the Overview screen of the installer (http://en.opensuse.org/images/b/b1/11.4_LIVE_installer-overview1.png) enable the option "Boot from /boot partiton", disable the option "Boot from MBR" 3.Let it install opensuse. Reboot the machine when prompted Actual Results: Grub is not installed on the disk with /boot on it, grub must be manually installed. Expected Results: Grub is installed on the disk with /boot, just like in 12.1M5, 11.4 and all previous releases. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(See posts 37 and 60) Using rescue mode and installing grub manually worked - though only when installed to MBR (hd0) and to to the the root partition (sd0,1) - which was a bit weird. I then also created a user account in rescue mode. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722988 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722988#c4 --- Comment #4 from Steffen Winterfeldt <snwint@suse.com> 2011-10-27 14:29:44 CEST --- You're sure that this is not bug 723777? It typically leads to an incomplete boot setup. Also, the missing user setup Pete reported points into that direction. I've just run two different tests and seen no issues with bootloader config. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I was testing with beta1, what release are you using where you don't see this? I'm away at the moment but when I get back home next week I can try testing this with the RC1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722988 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722988#c7 --- Comment #7 from Tim Edwards <iceman@fastmail.com.au> 2011-11-01 14:08:49 UTC --- I tried reproducing it using RC1 following the steps I wrote in the Description above and the bug didn't occur. So it looks like this particular bug was fixed sometime between the beta and RC1. Based on that I'd say that the X crashing bug is separate from the problem I saw and should be a different bug (if it's not already). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I installed 12.1 on a separate partition without installing a bootloader and then manually entered 12.1 in the menu.lst file for my 11.4 system. After testing 12.1 and getting it the way I wanted it I installed the bootloader in 12.1 to boot from root partition. This resulted in the described problem and using grub from a rescue disc cured the problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
