[Bug 511071] New: Online update during installation is screwed up
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=511071 Summary: Online update during installation is screwed up Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: PC OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ashaduri@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.64 (X11; Linux x86_64; U; en) Presto/2.1.1 If during installation of openSUSE I choose to perform an online update, yast software management is shown instead of yast online update. There are several other issues there as well. The detailed steps with their problems are: 1. Choose to perform an online update during system installation. 2. Problem: Yast software management shows up (instead of online update). Problem: There are no patches visible to deselect. The user is presented with a blank list. Essentially, the user is forced to update everything. Selecting "Installation summary" in a dropdown shows several packages (half of them related to package management, the other half is fetchmsfonts, poppler, manual, flash, etc...). Problem: Nowhere it says that only package management stack (plus a random selection of packages) is going to be updated now. 3. Upon clicking accept, after some packages are installed, the dialogs shows up: "Packages for package management were updated. Finishing and restarting now." Problem: This message is really unclear about what exactly is restarting, which could very well be the computer. 4. After that the software management shows up again (instead of online update). Problem: And again, there is no way to deselect the specific patches. 5. After everything is installed and the system is booted to KDE4, the online updater in the tray says that "fetchmsfonts" patch is going to be installed. However, the same patch (with the fonts) was installed during the very first update (together with the package management stack patches). Note sure if these require separate bug reports, it looks like a "one big issue" to me. Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If during installation of openSUSE I choose to perform an online update, yast software management is shown instead of yast online update.
There are several other issues there as well. The detailed steps with their problems are:
1. Choose to perform an online update during system installation.
2. Problem: Yast software management shows up (instead of online update).
There's no difference in online update, comparing to software management, so there's not a problem here.
Problem: There are no patches visible to deselect. The user is presented with > a blank list.
Well, yes, only package management stack should be updated for the first time, if anything other is updated as well, it may be a problem. Please attach YaST log files (http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/YaST)
3. Upon clicking accept, after some packages are installed, the dialogs shows up: "Packages for package management were updated. Finishing and restarting now." Problem: This message is really unclear about what exactly is restarting, which could very well be the computer.
But it wasn't computer, was it? ;-) Seriously, you're the first one to complain here, and the message is there for years. OK, maybe it should explicitly say that YaST is being restarted (but there are people who does not know YaST is being that installation tool...)
4. After that the software management shows up again (instead of online update). Problem: And again, there is no way to deselect the specific patches.
The patches probably should be able to deselect... y2log could help.
The problem with fetchmsfonts looks strange... let's see what the logs say. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

2. Problem: Yast software management shows up (instead of online update).
There's no difference in online update, comparing to software management, so there's not a problem here.
Well, there is. Online update shows "Patches" in the Filter dropdown by default. There is no "Patches" entry in the Filter dropdown in Software Management at all. The main problem is actually that since there is no Patches view, the user can't view the patches that he/she's going to install. More importantly, they cannot be deselected in a proper manner. Then there's this:
Problem: Nowhere it says that only package management stack (plus a random selection of packages) is going to be updated now.
3. Upon clicking accept, after some packages are installed, the dialogs shows up: "Packages for package management were updated. Finishing and restarting now." Problem: This message is really unclear about what exactly is restarting, which could very well be the computer.

Well, the whole process _could_ be a little more user-friendly. Perhaps the part where only the package management stack is updated could be more explicit about what's actually happening. Actually, the nice way to handle that would be to not show software management at all (during the package management stack update), and just make a checkbox or something (right where the checkbox for online update is). So, the user enables the "Update package management stack" checkbox (perhaps enabled by default), the system updates it (without those "Restarting..." messages), and then the user is presented with the actual Online Update screen. This also avoids having to click Accept (or OK, I don't remember exactly) twice, and also avoids the confusion about selecting some packages during the first run (the user has to confirm the same selection the second time after the package management stack update).
4. After that the software management shows up again (instead of online update). Problem: And again, there is no way to deselect the specific patches.
The patches probably should be able to deselect... y2log could help.
There are no patches visible because there is no "Patches" view there. See above. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Indeed, it does not start with Patches view, although the package selector is called with mode":`youMode and there are patches for package management available. I just reproduced it in Virtual Box...
