1.boot system 2.start ping to system --- runs fine 3.ssh to system and after passwd given, ssh waits forever and icmp et al dies

However, if I started a test download from within the vnc console on the system and I started shh -- it died again when I received open confirm rwindow 0 rmax 32768. Note that the system runs under KVM so technically the hypervisor itself may also affect this.
