[Bug 645861] New: Inadequate KDE4 performance - MacBook Pro 3 - Twinview - nvidia
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=645861 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=645861#c0 Summary: Inadequate KDE4 performance - MacBook Pro 3 - Twinview - nvidia Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: christopher.lang@acurana.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 SUSE/3.6.10-0.3.1 Firefox/3.6.10 Smolt Link: http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_7407a775-5097-42cc-aa6f-2f3be31d148d When using a MacBook pro V3 with KDE4 and a 2nd connected 1920x1200 monitor the KDE4 performace is extremely bad, especially on the 2nd Monitor. The Desktop effects are disabled, compositing is disabled. The proprietary NVidia drivers were installed. The performance is bad when booting the computer, but degrades over time. After a few hours of working moving around windows on the 2nd monitor is extremely sluggish (-> barely usable). This whole issue was not a problem at all with opensuse 11.1 and KDE3. Installing a kwin from KDE3 and removing kwin from KDE4 restores (accetpable) performance. Installing a 2.6.35 kernel as suggested in some forums does not change the situation. The same setup with an external monitor as described above under MAC OS X 10.4 delivers extremely fast video performance on both screens. packages: S | Name | Type | Version | Arch | Repository --+---------------------------+---------+--------------------------+--------+------------------ i | nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop | package | 256.53_k2.6.34.0_12-15.1 | x86_64 | NVIDIA Repository i | x11-video-nvidiaG02 | package | 256.53-16.1 | x86_64 | NVIDIA Repository S | Name | Type | Version | Arch | Repository --+----------------------+---------+----------------+--------+------------------------ i | kernel-desktop | package | 2.6.34.7-0.3.1 | x86_64 | openSUSE-11.3-Update Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. get a MacBook pro V3 (nvidia G84 [GeForce 8600M GT] ) 2. install opensuse 11.3 3. install proprietary Nvidia drivers 4. connect 1920 x 1200 external monitor 5. configure twinview for 3360x1200 pixels using the nvidia-settings tool 6. work for some time. The sluggishness in Firefox when browsing Slashdot can be fixed by issuing these commands in a shell: nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=0 nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=1 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=645861 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=645861#c3 --- Comment #3 from Christopher Lang <christopher.lang@acurana.de> 2012-02-04 20:03:39 UTC --- yes, this seems to be an nvidia driver issue. Google for "nvidia PixmapCache kde" and you will find lots of users complaining about graphics performance loss over time. For example look for this text: " This effect is temporarily cured if I "flush" Pixmap Cache with the following commands: nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=0 nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=1 " in http://www.poweradded.net/2011/06/nvidia-support-sucks.html This is going on for years, and it seems that nvidia support doesn't care much. Really bad. The only solution is to add the above nvidia-settings stuff to a cron job as a poor workaround. BTW: this happens for me with GeForce 8600M GT and a GeForce 7800 GTX too. Latest 290.10 driver. It can be tested best with long slashdot threads. In Firefox you will see the performance degradation after a few times scolling up and down. I also submitted issue #101031-000091 in the nvidia bug tracker "Nvidia Driver Feedback". Not even a reponse. Maybe you folks at Suse/Novell can kick some butt at nvidia. This would be highly appreciated. thanks! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For this reason there is also the policy that we don't track bugs caused by the propritary drivers. => Invalid. (To be read as 'Cannot fix') Sorry that we cannot really help here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
