[Bug 638232] New: Bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638232 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638232#c0 Summary: Bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: fenriswoolf@gmx.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_4; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Safari/533.18.5 “ Bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot." this is an error that is indigenous to 11.3 i tried to install 11.3 (downloaded in july) on a gateway nv53 with a 500 gb hdd with win7 already installed i believe something similar has been already reported, but there seems to be no real solution yet this error usually is displayed during install at the installation overview activation of grub into the mbr does not fix the problem after full install, the system does not boot properly on a dual boot system also tried to install 11.3 on a different computer with on own physical hdd -- same issue arose i just reinstalled 11.2 on the same machine 11.3 had this problem, and grub works fine Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.insert install disk opensuse 11.3 and begin install 2.go through installation steps 3.install runs smooth until one reaches installation overview, when under bootloader the following message is displayed: “ Bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot." Actual Results: continue with the installation, but initial boot takes you straight to win7 Expected Results: grub menu should appear and opensuse 11.3 should be launchable -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

uh .... as you can see, i kind of fixed this myself (see above) ... not very elegantly, i admit, but i have got a clean distro of 11.3 running ... i could try to reinstall on the other pc, but it will take me some time to respond ... also how do i get into the logs, if i don't get 11.3 booted? ... theo
At the end of installation pack files under /var/log/YaST2 and /mnt/var/log/YaST2/ or boot via rescue mode, mount disk and copy logs to e.g. USB or via network somewhere. It should work, as problem if happen appear as Error 18 returned by GRUB if BIOS support only lba-24. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

i do not understand why you guys are so hooked on the notion that it is a bios problem when it installs 11.2 without any problems ... i think i am missing something here ... something got changed from 11.2. to 11.3 that generates this error only in 11.3 ... i will install the 11.3 on my pc and try to access the log .. .theo
It is not error, it is just warning and it is only potential problem if bios support only lba24 which cannot address such address. But if installer doesn't report any fail, problem is somewhere else and I need logs to find what is real reason. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, it is NOT only a warning! I am not the first user that writes here, that the system does NOT boot into Linux after "installation" - not even show the GRUB menu. Is it so difficult to read, what people write here? But I bet, I too do not get an answer when I ask: Why then does the old 11.2 install IN THE SAME PARTITION, ON THE SAME COMPUTER without problems. What other proof is necessary to blame it on the 11.3 installation routine? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi, this message is only warning and something else which may be related (but also maybe not ) breaks booting and as I say without logs I cannot investigate what really happen. My expectation why it stop working is that something change in bootloader between these two releases, but there is more changes. So still please attach logs so I can find what happen ( because if problem is only in lba24 grub install fail ), so disc size should not break booting. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To be a bit more exact: There seem to be 2 effects. I read some user comments, that speak only of this warning and after the warning the system DOES boot. In my case, the warning appears in the beginning of the installation progress as described already. At the end of the installation progress a message appears, that warns again and suggests to rectify the boot configuration files with a button to jump to the file editor. But the entries there seem to be correct. Even when I change something there, this message keeps coming. If I choose to skip the "correction" then the said effect of boot fail arises.
So, if ONLY the warning in the beginning appears, there seems to be a chance of booting, if in the end of the installation the second message appears, then you are lost.
Does your BIOS support lba32 or just 24? It is important in this case.
I must admit, I am a little bit fed up with openSUSE now. I gave up and installed Linux Mint - by the way, also above 128 GB (but I understand, it uses GRUB 2 instead).
grub2 use different way how to start from partition. GRUB 1 use BIOS to skip somewhere, so BIOS must be able to address space on disc, where is kernel. GRUB2 use different way, where BIOS addressing is not needed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Still on the BIOS-warpath? ;-) Before I check this: let me repeat my question: Why does 11.2 install without problems in the same partition, or has this LBA difference only become relevant in 11.3? Would it not be more fruitful to check which changes have been made in the "boot department" from 11.2 to 11.3? Now, let me see (I am typing on a different computer now). The board in question is a 2 years old ASUS M3A78-EM. The BIOS only offers me to choose between LBA "disabled" and "auto", which is on "auto" of course. Also the manual does not give more information. So, how could I check this difference? How are the chances, that this fairly modern board does not support LBA32? Would I not have problems then addressing the full space of a 1.5 TB disk (which I have not)?
grub2 use different way how to start from partition. GRUB 1 use BIOS to skip somewhere, so BIOS must be able to address space on disc, where is kernel. GRUB2 use different way, where BIOS addressing is not needed.
Maybe now a good opportunity to think about implementing GRUB2 in 11.4 or going back to the 11.2 routine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If it works with 11.2, then problem should be somewhere else and I need have logs to see what really happen and what is really written into boot sector.

We support wide range of different hardware scenarios with grub1 and some of this scenarious is not fully supported in grub2, but there is some attempts to have it as additional bootloader option. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have the same problem. Do you think moving a partition so that it lies below 128 GB is possible?
At the first please don't change priority. I or my manager (it means also opensuse community manager) can change it and it indicate how serious it is among of other my bugs ( so only person who has overview of all my bugs can set it). At the second it is possible to move partition as I write above. If root partition is smaler then 128 GB then move it as first partition. If it is bigger, then create separate boot partition and place it at beginning. At third - I still needs logs, could anyone who reproduce bug add it there, please? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

there's another yast2 log-1 which exceeds 10Mb and won't attach ... theo
Hmm, y2log-1 is important as it contain logs from first boot. You can compress it before attach ( e.g. `lzma y2log-1` and attach y2log-1.lzma ) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
