[Bug 340980] New: NoSource: tag in spec files
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=340980 Summary: NoSource: tag in spec files Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: adrian@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: aj@novell.com, coolo@novell.com, mls@novell.com, ro@novell.com Found By: --- As discussed before on the research ml: We have currently a policy to disallow "NoSource:" tags in packages for openSUSE distribution. The kernel flavour spec files do contain them currently, what results in nosrc.rpms. Possible solutions: 1. Remove NoSource tag and ship full src.rpms for all flavours 2. Remove NoSource tag and do not ship src.rpms for the kernel flavours, because all sources are already in the kernel-source src.rpm. This would however violate the policy to ship all src.rpms for all $arch.rpms 3. Do a different packaging of the kernel, where the sources come from a central package and do not get package in a all src.rpms. 4. Do stop shipping src.rpms completely, but offering the download via a different mechanism. Please comment what options are thinkable or not acceptable for you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could the kernel-flavor spec have a BuildRequires: kernel-source and build with the kernel-source source files? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you want to enforce this policy and you are willing to sacrifice the additional space, so be it. (Currently this would be around 320M in i386). I would see this as a completely pointless exercise, but it's not my decision. Ad 3. Having all the kernel-$flavor packages depend on kernel-source was a big pain in the back. We are quite happy with how the packages are split at the moment, with the sources in all kernel-$flavor packages instead. This makes building test kernels much easier. So we are very unlikely to make work that much harder for us. Ad 2., 4., Both are about not shipping all the src.rpms. We could to that and add a note somewhere. I have no objections to that, but we'll get a few more complaints because more people won't find the src.rpms they are looking for. So make your choice: either to leave things as they are despite this policy which doesn't add any value, waste a lot of space by shipping all the sources with all the packages, or stop shipping the kernel-$flavor.src.rpm packages altogether. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
