https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=765051 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=765051#c0 Summary: No connection with Android Phone / mpt devices for file transfer Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: axel.braun@gmx.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:12.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/12.0 I noticed that it is not possible to connect an Android phone (in this case a Google Nexus) to openSUSE 12.1. Android seems to use mpt as transport mechanism. So it should be possible to create some udev-rules that do the job, ideally within the openSUSE 12.1 standard system I followed the instructions in https://411technology.wordpress.com/2011/05/14/howto-setup-the-galaxy-tab-or... but that seems not to work under 12.1. it is not mounted as there is no direct filesystem available.
amarok uses libmtp9 to access it.
There is "FUSE" based "mtpfs" which can also access it.
I would have hoped the last release that includes also Nexus support, would have worked with Amarok. :/
Well, I dont see any attached player or something in Amarok...
For mtpfs usage, install the mtpfs RPM, mkdir ~/nexus in your homedirectory then run (with the player attached): mtpfs ~/nexus
That works as well (BTW, do I still need the udev rules in that case?) but lists only the directory structure, but no files within the directories. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

KDE 4.10 upstream supports MTP via KDE-KIO-slave. http://www.afiestas.org/workspaces-gain-mtp-support/ 2. It doesn't work with openSUSE 12.3 (RC1) x64. (tested on Qomsio X300 hardware) 3. This bug is critical, because it disallows openSUSE to enter the Post-PC era, and you will not be able to copy files to/from your Android 4.x devices. History: USB MTP (universal serial bus - media transfer protocol) was developed to replace the USB Mass Storage. Problem with mass storage is that it is not reliable - it is block-device-level protocol. And if PC goes power down (or blue screen, on certain O.S) the data on the smartphone will be damaged, and there is no "scandisk" on the smartphone, so it will become unreadable. MTP overcomes this problem by being filesystem level protocol (as opposed to block device), and is supported since Windows hasta-la-Vista. (since 2006) The result: Google decided to remove USB Mass Storage from Android 4.x devices. Newer Android devices support MTP-only. MTP is a killer feature, and should be fixed in 12.3 *before release*. -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Fully agree. Just FYI: I upgraded my openSUSE 12.2 to KDE 4.10 via zypper dup --from KDE410 kio-mtp is delivered with KDE 4.10, but not installed automatically. Looking at the 'ease of use' especially for less experienced users, it should be installed by default.
