[Bug 433797] New: Local user's .xinitrc in $HOME may prevent login
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433797 Summary: Local user's .xinitrc in $HOME may prevent login Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: torarnv@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: Other openSuse 11 comes with a file in each user's home directory called ".xinitrc.template". This file is identical to the one in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. Normally you would expect $HOME/.xinitrc.template to be just that, a template, that you then hack up and edit for your own needs, and then rename to $HOME/.xinitrc, and that the system then would combine the default settings from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and the user's overrides from $HOME/.xinitrc, just like so many other system vs. user config files. But, on openSuse 11.0 $HOME/.xinitrc.template is actually used as is. Not only is that confusing, it's dangerous, as removing this file will prevent X from starting properly (or the window manager, KDE4 in this case, fails to start). Also, adding your own $HOME/.xinitrc will do the same thing, even though the original $HOME/.xinitrc.template is left as is. I haven't looked into the finer points of why this is happening, but I would suggest keeping the default system wide /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, removing the dependency on $HOME/.xinitrc.template, and allowing users to add their own $HOME/.xinitrc. My two cents... :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
