[Bug 264719] New: DVD-RAM, formatted udf are mounted 'ro' (not writable)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264719 Summary: DVD-RAM, formatted udf are mounted 'ro' (not writable) Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ingo.steiner@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: ingo.steiner@gmx.net Hardware is a Samsung SH-S183A sATA DVD-Recorder that also supports DVD-RAM. Kernel is Inserting a udf preformatted DVD-RAM is recognized by hal, but it is mounted read-only, so cannot be written. Seems a problem of hal? because: I can manually perform the mounting with this steps: 1. umount /dev/sr0 # release existing mount 2. mount -t udf -o rw,noatime /dev/sr0 /media/dvdram now the system complains like this: 'mount: blockorientiertes Gerät /dev/sr0 ist schreibgeschützt, wird eingehängt im Nur-Lese-Modus' => and mounts read-only 3. remount again (with final options): mount -t udf -o remount,rw,noatime,uid=1000 /dev/sr0 /media/dvdram now mounts the DVD-RAM 'rw' and I can smoothly write on it .... Remark: DVD-RAM disks which have been written with an ISO-9660 filesystem (I do use it to boot from even) are not recognized at all, have to be mounted manually. My guess, it depends on a kernel bug, see here: http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=116007607004211&w=2 http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/12/16/134 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264719 ------- Comment #6 from ingo.steiner@gmx.net 2007-04-19 12:59 MST ------- But on the other hand, here the problem appears if I just issue the mount commands in a terminal (see my first post): 1. umount /dev/sr0 # release existing mount 2. mount -t udf -o rw,noatime /dev/sr0 /media/dvdram now the system complains like this: 'mount: blockorientiertes Gerät /dev/sr0 ist schreibgeschützt, wird eingehängt im Nur-Lese-Modus' => and mounts read-only 3. remount again (with final options): mount -t udf -o remount,rw,noatime,uid=1000 /dev/sr0 /media/dvdram As you can see, upon the first mount command (step 2) the output in the terminal is (I translate from German): 'block device /dev/sr0 is write protected and thus is mounted read-only' (the subdirectory /media/dvdram I have created manually) and in step 3 the 'remount option' is successful (read-write). I am not using any 3rd party tools or applications, just the 'mount' command supplied in openSUSE 10.2. Also performed regular updates, kernel now is at '2.6.18.8-0.1-default' running on an Athlon64x2 4200EE (dual core). Same happens with k3b (does not allow writing to the DVD-RAM). And it happens only with DVD-RAM, DVD+RW can be erased and written with k3b And DVD-RAM with ISO-9660 is not mounted at all, have to perform that manually. Could it be that it is a kernel bug as described in this link: http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=116007607004211&w=2 or can it be that the dual core CPU contributes? Need more info? Scratch that, just "hwinfo" without the "--all"
Here it comes as 2 attachments recorded at different stages: 1. just inserted the DVD-RAM, was detected byHAL and mounted 'ro' filename hwinfo-mounted-ro then I performed my workaround with following command sequence: pp:/home/ingo/temp # hwinfo > hwinfo-mounted-ro pp:/home/ingo/temp # umount /dev/sr0 pp:/home/ingo/temp # mount -t udf -o rw,noatime /dev/sr0 /media/dvdram mount: blockorientiertes Gerät /dev/sr0 ist schreibgeschützt, wird eingehängt im Nur-Lese-Modus pp:/home/ingo/temp # mount -t udf -o remount,rw,noatime,uid=1000 /dev/sr0 /media/dvdram pp:/home/ingo/temp # hwinfo > hwinfo-remounted-rw 2. after that procedure the DVD-RAM is mounted 'rw' and this is recorded as hwinfo-remonted-rw By the way, to be sure it is not the hardware itself (Samsung sATA S183A), tomorrow I will receive a second recorder (also sATA LG GSA H30N) and try that as well. I will post the result here as well. Could it be that it is a timing issue with the 'sata_nv' module which serves my nForce 570-Ultra chipset - that seemed to cause also other trouble according to several posts in the usenet? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264719 ------- Comment #12 from ingo.steiner@gmx.net 2007-05-03 05:11 MST ------- Good News! this morning I received the LG GSA-H30N, Firmware 1.0.1 and this one works out of the box! HAL immediately mounts DVD-RAM rw and I can write on it. The only thing at the moment is, that writing is extremely slow, because it does not use 'mount rainer'. I have installed both: 'udftools' and 'dvd+rw-tools' using Yast, but obviously that is not enough. Will have to fiddle out. So at least it is now confimed that the Samsung SH-S183A caused the trouble. It has latest firmware available 'SB02'. This is worth a posting to warn other users buying that drive (at least for Linux). Or do you thing that can be fixed in Linux? If you need any more info, please advise. writing is extremely slow, because it does not use 'mount rainer'
FYI here the corresponding output from 'cat /proc/mounts': ... /dev/sr1 /media/0\040-\040DISK_8 udf rw,sync, nosuid, nodev 0 0 which is not the proper setting for DVD-RAM. Should be: ...... udf rw,noatime, nosuid, nodev, noexec 0 0 with packet writing enabled. I tried loading the module manually: 'modprobe pktcdvd' but it does not improve the situation, writing speed is somwhere around 5 kB/s and thus takes > 1 day to copy 500 MB:-( Remark: I also installed Ubuntu 7.04 (kernel 2.6.20) and it enables packet writing by default for the LG GSA-H30N and writes at some 3 MB/s, which is the expected speed for a 3x DVD-RAM medium. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I also tried to interchange the sATA-ports of both drives, does not change anything, the Samsung is mounted ro and can only be made rw by remounting from a terminal by calling mount. Another curious observation: normally /dev/dvdram is a symbolic link to /dev/sr0. when I manually change the ling to have /dev/dvdram point to /dev/sr1, on next reboot the system habgs and only the reset button helps. After that reset, PC boots normally and the link to /dev/dvdram points to /dev/sr0 again. What is going on there? FYI here the corresponding output from 'cat /proc/mounts': .... /dev/sr1 /media/0\040-\040DISK_8 udf rw,sync, nosuid, nodev 0 0
which is not the proper setting for DVD-RAM. Should be: ....... udf rw,noatime, nosuid, nodev, noexec 0 0
with 10.3 at least KDE use no longer sync with udf dvd-ram volumes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
