Nice way to implement this! Is it then also possible to disable system wide as well as per user?
Right now the systemwide setting comes from the default value for the GConf key /apps/nautilus/desktop/predefined_items_dir. This key points to a directory that holds the .desktop files that will be shown in users' desktops. You can change this sytemwide default; if you remove the default value, no icons will be added to desktops. Why such a complicated scheme? Why not just put the desktop files in /etc/skel/Desktop so a user can decide if they want them? I agree. You can't even move the icons around without getting an Error dialog. Stephen- can you make a decision on this? When I unset that key and restart Nautilus, it gets created again from the schema. This does the trick: gconftool-2 --set /apps/nautilus/desktop/predefined_items_dir --type string "" But of course there could be icons in the predefined_items_dir that a user actually does want to have... This is a bit of an awkward and frustrating user experience for the GM... I'd really like to see this patched as an online update. I found the two icons on the desktop locked, and where do you think they were? Not in the desktop folder, no, they are in /usr/share/dist/desktop-files/ You need to use nautilus file browser as root. I do this by opening a root terminal and starting it from a command line. I ended up with the original 2 user ones, and the 2 new root ones.
