Since the the list of "ps ax" contains the following processes: 3754 ? S 0:00 /usr/lib64/hal/hald-addon-cpufreq 3755 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-acpi: listening on acpid socket /var/run/acpid.socket 3756 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/sdi is locked via HAL 3758 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/sdj is locked via HAL 3760 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/sdk is locked via HAL 3762 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/sdl is locked via HAL 3793 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/sr1 is locked via HAL 3797 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/sr2 is locked via HAL 3810 ? S 0:00 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/sr0 is locked via HAL 3814 ? Now, hal does not crash any more. Media (DVD) inserted are recognized by KDE and opened. I cannot check vmware any more, because i uninstalled it in the mean time. Instead i have found the attached snippet in /var/log/messages (from powersaved). This does not hurt me, because frequencies and temperatures are in the known range. But it might be useful for You.
