[Bug 656138] New: KDE4 hangs on startup
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=656138 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=656138#c0 Summary: KDE4 hangs on startup Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: jaanvajakas@hot.ee QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/4.4; Linux) KHTML/4.4.4 (like Gecko) SUSE After installing updates to openSUSE 11.3, KDE4 hangs on startup unless the nomodeset kernel parameter is used. (Before updating, out of the box this problem did not occur). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE 11.3 from KDE4 Live CD. 2. Log in to the installed system (works normally). 3. Install all available updates except the optional one (Microsoft TrueType Core fonts). 4. Reboot. 5. Log in to the installed system. The progress bar stops at the middle when loading KDE. 6. Press Ctrl-Alt-F1. The console shows up. 7. Press Ctrl-Alt-F7. The computer hangs completely: Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not work, Num Lock does not switch the keyboard light anymore, Alt-Ctrl-Del and power button seem to do nothing. Workarounds: * If instead of step 7 I log in as root and execute killall kdm kdm and log in again then KDE starts up normally. * If instead of steps 4-7 I log into IceWM then IceWM starts up normally. * If in step 4 I specify the kernel parameter nomodeset in GRUB then step 4 completes normally except that the display resolution is lower than the native resolution of my LCD display. Actual Results: See above. Expected Results: KDE login should not hang at step 5. The system should not hang at step 7. My motherboard is AOpen i945GMt-VFA with Intel i945GM chipset. The resolution of my LCD display is 1680x1050. The kernel version now (after updates at step 3) is 2.6.34.7-0.5-default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

KDE4 login) completes normally (except that the display resolution is lower). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I suggest to downgrade the kernel to the initial release of openSUSE 11.3 to verify that assumption. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

At first I tried downgrading the packages kernel-default and kernel-default-base to the first revision in the update repository (2.6.34.4-0.1.1) but that did not fix the bug. So I downgraded kernel-default and kernel-default-base to the versions in OpenSUSE OSS repository (2.6.34-12.3) and then I also had to downgrade ndiswrapper-kmp-default and preload-kmp-default because YAST complained something about dependencies. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not aware of any regressions reported. Does kernel:stable work for you? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=656138 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=656138#c5 Jaan Vajakas <jaanvajakas@hot.ee> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW InfoProvider|jaanvajakas@hot.ee | --- Comment #5 from Jaan Vajakas <jaanvajakas@hot.ee> 2010-12-08 21:45:41 UTC --- I switched kernel-default to the version in kernel:stable (2.6.36.1-2.2-i586) and uninstalled preload-kmp-default and ndiswrapper-kmp-default and ndiswrapper (because there were no versions available corresponding to the kernel version) and the problem was gone. Interestingly, when I downgraded kernel-default again to 2.6.34.7-0.5.1, the KDE startup problem did not occur any more, even after I reinstalled preload-kmp-default, ndiswrapper-kmp-default and ndiswrapper. But then I noticed another problem (probably it was there before, but I did not notice it, and most probably it is connected to the KDE startup problem): when I opened a Youtube video in Firefox then if I clicked on the "full screen" button of the Flash applet then the system would hang (the screen is filled with the Flash app with some text like "Press Esc to exit full-screen mode", the mouse cursor can be moved, but keyboard (even Num Lock light) does not respond and neither do mouse buttons). Then I experimented to see whether this newly discovered bug exists in other kernel versions, this time installing different versions of the kernel-desktop package (but not installing kernel-desktop-base nor preload-kmp-desktop nor ndiswrapper-kmp-desktop). Again versions 2.6.34-12 and 2.6.36.1-2.2 did not have this problem but version 2.6.34.4-0.1.1 did. So it seems that the update repo kernel versions 2.6.34.4-0.1.1 up to 2.6.34.7-0.5.1 have some bug that the kernel:stable version 2.6.36.1-2.2 and the openSuse OSS version 2.6.34-12 do not have. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is worth to report as a separate bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
