If the gnome screen lock runs for a while (usually hours), the password input field stays disabled and "authentication error" is shown below. The only way out currently is to restart gdm. Note that this doesn't happen if the screen lock runs for a short time (approx up to 1hr). Luckily I had a console window open and could restart gnome-shell.
