[Bug 304224] New: printing the EULA
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=304224 Summary: printing the EULA Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: koenig@linux.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- about "to print the EULA, use license.tar.gz on the CD" or similar: please add the EULA _uncompressed_ and (additionally) in DOS text format on the CD/DVD medias! a *.tar.gz can't be read/printed from a plain windows systems before doing a very first linux installation. so new linux/unix users have a chicken-and-egg problem: they first have to install linux to be able to access/use the EULA. that's not the spirit of an open OS ! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

EULA.txt is still present on the CD!
ok, good to know ;-) I only read the yast installer message and thought... so, what's the point inhaving both the readable EULA.txt and then license.tar.gz ? and why does the yast installer refer to license.tar.gz and not to EULA.txt ? but for my major point, that's ok for now ;-) thanks! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, it has been changed intentionally, .tar.gz can be extracted on windows system with winzip installed.
iff winzip is installed... that's not M$ WinXY anymore, and as a windows zealot I would argue that that's the typical arogance of Linux ignoring "standards"... I did not see that "winzip" constraint when I first read your comment, so I asked some colleagues with windows skills -- and they showed me that on their XP systems they haven't been able to open some demo.tar.gz (obviously winzip is not installed, so they lost...). what's wrong with *.zip files as smallest common denominator ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Good point however .tar.gz is on the same "standard"-level as .zip :))) *.zip files are blocked by firewalls (as already mentioned in comment #7) and for Linux users is *.tar.gz better than *.zip. openSUSE seems to be basically rather for openSUSE than Windows users ;) Anyway, we could have both .tar.gz and .zip on the media :) as a tricky solution... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
