[Bug 526075] New: Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.1/repodata/primary.xml.gz
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=526075 Summary: Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.1/repodata/pri mary.xml.gz Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: weasi5l@4email.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Other Created an attachment (id=308618) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=308618) strace -f -e connect zypper ref repo-update output I've been using opensuse 11.1 since spring, and ever since late June I have been having problems refreshing the default Update repository. I have no problem refreshing Oss, nonOss, source, and debug repositories. The repository from this page http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories for Update 11.1 version gives me the same error as default install repo-update. It starts the download process, then chokes after a few minutes, not always the exact same byte output: # zypper ref repo-update Retrieving repository 'repo-update' metadata [\]Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.1/repodata/primary.xml.gz': Error code: Unrecognized error Error message: transfer closed with 1777371 bytes remaining to read Abort, retry, ignore? [A/r/i]: A Retrieving repository 'repo-update' metadata [error] Repository 'repo-update' is invalid. Can't provide ./repodata/primary.xml.gz : Media Exception Please check if the URIs defined for this repository are pointing to a valid repository. Skipping repository 'repo-update' because of the above error. Could not refresh the repositories because of errors. To produce error as root use zypper ref repo-update, or go to system>yast>online update>refresh and I get the same error in a pop up box. I use a 56K modem. I have tried refreshing Update with default firewall in sysconfig disabled, as well with NetworkManager disabled (rebooted) with same error. To fix this, I have been using an alternate mirror from Germany, which works. http ://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/ In the past week I have reinstalled opensuse11.1 and got this error upon initial first update refresh, so maybe something has changed with the default mirror. I then updated the system with the alternative mirror and then changed back to the default mirror found at the main repository page (link above) to test if problem still exists, and got the same error. I labeled bug as Minor, as I can get the updates from an alternative mirror. Just curious what has happened since June? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Last Spring, I was not able to ping after setting up my modem via YaST. I had to manually add the servers: System>YaST>System>/etc/sysconfig Editor>Network>General>Netconfig_DNS_Static_Servers and entered 209.244.0.3 209.244.0.4 in the field>okay (rebooted). I just did this and I am now able to refresh the default repo-update, as well as the link at the main page for the Package Repositories. In YaSt, my settings are this: System>YaST>Network Devices>Modem>Modem Devices>Edit>(next, next, next)Connection Parameters>Manually (I tried to change it to "automatically", but upon reboot, and checking Connection Parameters, it had reverted back to "manually". So, if there is another bug report concerning why DNS servers aren't automatically detected for dial up users, then this is related. Kinternet>Settings>View Configuration shows blank for both dns1 and dns2. The reduction was meant as proactive measure against a recently published denial of service attack (slowloris). It is very good that you report this problem, because it is the first time that I hear about it (after a month), but other people might be affected. I have changed the timeout from 10 to 30 seconds now. Could you please let me know if this reliably makes the problem go away? Having said all this, I am assuming that you are using a modem, which is connected to the Internet over a slow connection, is that correct? Thanks a lot! Thank you! And I thought it finally worked earlier today because I had added the two nameservers. : ) Just to let you know, I removed the name servers from the Netconfig_DNS_Static_Servers (blank field), rebooted, and tried again, and yes, it works now with the default repo-update. So, ignore my comment about not being able to ping. On this second re-install of openSuse, I was able to ping out using browser, as I disabled NetworkManager, which was originally what caused my DNS address problems last Spring. Yes, slow connection here, about 4.4 to 5.5 kb/s, but fast enough for me. Thanks again, Peter, for working on this. I have found a few other people with same problem at some of the various opensuse forums around the world. I appreciate your time! But I'm quite sure that it is not implemented in libzypp. In your case, I'm not sure whether increasing the timeout further would be beneficial. I agree it would be the best thing if libzypp would retry and re-get. I wonder how Factory is doing in this regard, using aria2c as download backend. aria2c can do regets as well, but I don't think that libzypp makes use of it.
