[Bug 404565] New: Problems with (un)docking
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=404565 Summary: Problems with (un)docking Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: hmacht@novell.com ReportedBy: msawicz@novell.pl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=224852) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=224852) lspci output for all three usecases On a Dell X300, when trying to undock with gnome-docker, the applet says that undocking failed, even when it has undocked fine. Also, echoing 1 into /sys/proc/.../undock undocks fine, but the echo process hangs. Pressing the 'undock' button on my dock undocks fine, too. A bigger problem is that the only way to re-dock after undocking is to suspend / hibernate / power cycle, a reboot doesn't help. On windows all this behaves fine, undocking through software / button undocks fine, putting the laptop back in the dock re-docks it all fine. The three requested lspcis: - booting without dock - booting with dock - booting with dock, then undocked Don't differ at all, I've attached only one. Maybe lsusbs will be of more help, attached two. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do you have a small indicator LED at the dock station which turns green when pressing the eject button? Do you have a eject button at all or do you just remove the laptop from the dock? By undocking I mean either pressing the eject button or undocking via software. Taking the laptop off of the dock just disconnects all ports (obviously) and that's it, I can put it back on the dock just fine. The problem (again, obviously) is that the software doesn't know that it should disable devices that're connected through the dock. Rebooting doesn't do nothing, the dock stays off. I presume it's because it doesn't do a power cycle that, for example suspending, does. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In both cases the computer actually undocks but I'm still unable to re-dock without a power / suspend cycle. What's more I just discovered that undocking with the applet somehow breaks suspending (on both stock and your provided kernel) - I've had much luck with suspending since 11.1 but after pressing 'Undock' in the applet the machine won't suspend, it'd go to the console screen and back to the locked screensaver after some 5s. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I installed the kernel that you mentioned in Comment #17, and here's what happened: 1. I did "dmesg -c dmesg_pre_620.log". 2. I selected Undock from the Docker (Gnome) applet. 3. The light in the dock's button that releases the laptop went on. The external monitor remained active, as did the external keyboard and mouse (both USB). 4. A few seconds later, I got two notifications at the lower right of my screen, the lower one said that my laptop was undocked, and the upper one said that undocking failed. 5. Another few seconds later, my external monitor went dark, and the external mouse and keyboard stopped working. The light in the dock's button that releases the laptop had gone out. 6. I did "dmesg -c dmesg_failed_620.log". 7. I re-did steps 2 and 3 above, but did not wait for the notifications in 4. I just pushed the button to release the laptop and removed the laptop. 8. I did "dmesg -c dmesg_removed_620.log". I hope some of this helps. Let me know if you'd like more information or experimentation. By the way, a couple more observations: - It occurs to me that I'm not sure what undocking should look like. Was it successful at the end of step 3? - I'm running the A08 version of the BIOS; it looks like there's an A10. - My dock is a Dell PR01X, more of a port extender than a full dock. I'll attach the log files that I mentioned above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does everything work for you when doing step 7? Can you redock and everything works fine? Anyway, you're right, I think there are two different issues in this bug. If step 7 does not work right for you, please open a new bug and assign it directly to me so we can continue discussion there.
