(on 10.3 it happened without this trigger). here is the history: I have bought a new computer (has ASUS P5M-MX motherboard which uses nForce 610i(MCP73V) chipset and Intel E4600 CPU). when I installed openSUSE 10.3_64 I found the computer was occasionally freezing when say starting a program or shutting down the system. Once they are triggered they then continue continuously until I shut down the system. The only thing that seems to trigger these log messages is to mount a network (ethernet) drive: mount.cifs //192.168.0.4/share /mnt/buffalo -o username=guest and then copy a directory between the network drive and my (sata) hard drive. As soon as I start the copy the messages start and continue even after the copy has completed until I shut down the system. I have not found anything else that triggers the log messages, for instance, copying a directory between the sata disk and a usb drive does not cause any problems nor does copying directories within the sata disk. I don't think it is a hardware problem with the hard drive because I used a different physical drive when I switched from 10.3 to 11.0. Apologies for any wasted time this may have caused. The ethernet card is just a generic 10/100M pci card that uses an RTL8139C chip. I discovered this when the bug was triggered when I was streaming an audio file. So the bug was triggered by cifs or streaming (but not by normal internet browsing, downloads, email, suse updater or other web stuff). I therefore decided to investigate the network card and after a lot of hassle I finally managed to get the nvidia ethernet port on the motherboard to work (I still don't know how, after doing a lot of stuff in YAST, it just started working). When I used this port the problem did not happen. I have managed to get another network card so that I can do some more extensive testing, I have tested the following 3 ethernet ports: nVidia Ethernet controller RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ Belkin F5D5005 Gigabit Desktop Network PCI Card The nVidia port is built into the motherboard, the other 2 cards are PCI cards. All 3 ports trigger freezes when starting programs or shutting down the system. Only the 2 ports on PCI cards trigger the ata frozen messages in the log. Just to recap: these problems are only triggered by cifs or streaming over the network, other network traffic does not cause any problems, once triggers the problems continue until the system is shutdown. When I managed to get a Belkin ethernet card that had all the symptoms. So if it is specific to any type of hardware it must be the ASUS p5n-mx motherboard. You are correct that after the fault was triggered I was not able to access the CD/DVD drive. Usually when I insert a disk it gets automounted but this does not happen after the fault was triggered. Automount does not happen after the fault is triggered. In other words: before trigger: automount happens when disc is inserted. after trigger: automount does not happen when disc is inserted. I booted the computer with a disc inserted and then continuously accessed it as suggested, this did not trigger the problem. (system log attached - I did not notice any problem). Or did you want me to trigger the fault by accessing the network drive WHILE accessing the disc drive? I have not tried this. I have not tried disabling the polling as I don't know how to do that. With this cable unplugged I was NOT able to trigger the bug. Do you think the bug could be specific to the dvd drive that I am using? This one is ATAPI device going wayward resulting in hald polling commands to timeout while yours is some hard drives timing out on SMART ENABLE OPERATIONS and you guys are on different chipsets from different vendors. Martin, NV acquired PATA controller logic from AMD, so the same driver is used. You're on intel cpu but on NV chipset and cpu doesn't really have much to do with which ATA driver should be used. I still need to know whether disabling hald polling makes the problem go away. That is, please do hal-disable-polling on the failing device *before* the failure occurs and see if you still can trigger the problem. Also, after the problem occurs, can you access the drive? If not, please post the kernel log after trying, it will show errors for different commands.
