[Bug 846342] New: Update icon broken in Xfce desktop
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=846342 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=846342#c0 Summary: Update icon broken in Xfce desktop Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Xfce AssignedTo: bnc-team-xfce@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: norbert.jurkeit@web.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/24.0 If updates are available, pk-update-icon shows up in the system tray of the Xfce desktop and also presents a small window with the number of available updates and a button to install them. When clicking the button with OS 13.1 RC1, the small window disappears, but nothing else happens. In 12.3 and before gpk-update-viewer was started after clicking the button. I noticed that this program was missing and tried to install package gnome-packagekit, but got a message that this package conflicts with package apper, which made me unsure ho to proceed. Reproducible: Always I first installed openSUSE 13.1 RC1 from live KDE DVD because KDE is my 2. choice of GUI. I then added Xfce as my 1. choice from the 13.1 repository by selecting pattern "Xfce desktop environment" in YaST. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If updates are available, pk-update-icon shows up in the system tray of the Xfce desktop and also presents a small window with the number of available updates and a button to install them. When clicking the button with OS 131 RC1, the small window disappears, but nothing else happens.
In 12.3 and before gpk-update-viewer was started after clicking the button. I noticed that this program was missing and tried to install package gnome-packagekit, but got a message that this package conflicts with package apper, which made me unsure ho to proceed.
Two issues here: 1. pk-update-icon is missing a hard dependency on gnome-packagekit because it is configured to run gpk-update-viewer at compile time, I'll take care of that one 2. apper conflicts with gnome-packagekit because both provide the org.freedesktop.PackageKit.service DBus service And this conflict is not technically necessary, DBus service files providing the same service can be installed in parallel with different names, DBus will then arbitrarily pick one based on the file name order. Not exactly nice but this is one of the many deficiencies of DBus and needs to be solved there (see this bug from 2009 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20099) as it affects other services as well which have invented ugly workarounds like the notification daemons that need to be stared by the desktop session. @Dominique: Can we get rid of this again, activating an arbitrary provider still seems better than preventing parallel installation of KDE/Xfce/GNOME? No other major distro does this, see e.g. http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/apper/filelist http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/i386/apper/filelist http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/apper.git/tree/apper.spec http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauldron/apper/current/SPECS/apper.spec?vi... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

sounds fine with me, preferably doing the same hack as Fedora does: # hack around gnome-packagekit conflict mv %{buildroot}%{_datadir}/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.PackageKit.service \ %{buildroot}%{_datadir}/dbus-1/services/kde-org.freedesktop.PackageKit.service -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
