[Bug 1082107] New: Can't install on EFI partition less than 256MiB
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1082107 Bug ID: 1082107 Summary: Can't install on EFI partition less than 256MiB Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: pfliegel.sebastian@gmail.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- With recent ISO images (introduced with 20180218 or a few days earlier) I receive a warning when I try to mount /boot/efi to a partition which is less than 256 MiB. Here's the output: The system might not be able to boot: - Missing device for /boot/efi with size equal or bigger than 256 MiB and filesystem vfat I continued nonetheless to see if it would be working. Here's the partition installation layout: Delete brfs on /dev/sda5 (85.21 GiB) Delete xfs on /dev/sdb4 (618.76 GiB) Delete swap on /dev/sdb2 (16.00 GiB) Format partition /dev/sdb4 (618.76 GiB) for /home with xfs Create partition /dev/sdb2 (16.00 GiB) for swap Format partition /dev/sda5 (85.21 GiB) for / with btrfs Mount partition /dev/sda2 (100.00 MiB) at /boot/efi Error at installation is: Mounting /dev/sda2 at /boot/efi device not found, sid:158 Continue despite the error There was never a need to have a 256 MiB EFI partition (only now starting with the recent snapshots). This partition is created by Windows. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1082107 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1082107#c1 Neil Rickert <nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com --- Comment #1 from Neil Rickert <nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com> --- It is only a warning. I just installed Leap 15.0 Build 139.1. And I got the same warning. My EFI partition is only 33M, because that's what an earlier Leap 15.0 install recommended and created. I told it to go ahead with the install anyway. And the install went fine (if I ignore the problems that I reported in bug 1082143 ). Opinion: (1) The 256M size for EFI is reasonable. The previous 33M was on the small side; (2) Maybe the warning message should be reworded to be a bit less scary. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1082107 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1082107#c4 --- Comment #4 from Neil Rickert <nwr10cst-oslnx@yahoo.com> --- A note to Steffen: I saw a similar message. It should be in the logs that I attached for bug 1082143 Replying to Sebastian: The message I got was scary. It sounded as if the install would fail. That was the message about no EFI partition 256M or larger. I continued anyway. Then I got the message about device not found. That looked like an installer bug, so I continued anyway. I reported that as bug 1082143 . Note that the install did actually work. So, yes, continue after that "device not found". I should add that I was doing a test install into a virtual machine. So if it failed, that would not have been a big problem for me. If you were installing into a real machine, it would have looked even scarier. The Yast team is redesigning the partitioner. And I guess there are still a few bugs there that we are finding and reporting back to them. Mostly, the new design looks pretty good, but with some rough spots remaining. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1082107 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1082107#c6 --- Comment #6 from Sebastian Pfliegel <pfliegel.sebastian@gmail.com> --- When I hit abort: Internal error. Please report a bug report with logs. Run save_y2logs to get complete logs. Details: Storage::Exception Caller /mounts/mp_0001/usr/share/YaST2/lib/y2storage/storage_manager.rb:217:in `commit' Log is now attached. When I continue: Installation proceeds and succeeds. Even the boot manager is working fine. So it's just an unhandled exception. Btw, I installed the very same snapshot (20180220) today also on my notebook (single boot), where I created the EFI partition myself (256 MiB) and got not no warning, nor an error. This means it looks like the error only pops up if the warning (less than 256 MiB) gets displayed as well. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
