[Bug 441507] New: Mechanism to discard rebuilt package that have no changes to the previous package
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441507 Summary: Mechanism to discard rebuilt package that have no changes to the previous package Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: BuildService AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: wberrier@gmail.com QAContact: adrian@novell.com Found By: --- I find myself upgrading hundreds of megabytes of packages from the build service per month. I go to look to see what new features, bug fixes, etc, are in these new upgrades, and realize they are mostly package rebuilds with no real or necessary changes. Wouldn't it be great if we could somehow compare a newly built package against the previous package to see if there were actually any real changes? Then the newly built package could be discarded if no changes were found. This would save a lot of mirror bandwidth, and possibly build time (since this package alone wouldn't add any more new dependencies). Other projects are on the other end of the spectrum (ie: packman). They rely on manual rebuilds, and that often gets them in to trouble. But they usually only rebuild if it is required. I think the above would be a nice middle ground.
