Fortunately in this case I could reproduce it according to "It always helps to simulate printout on a virtual generic PostScript printer" in https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_Report_a_Printing_Issue When I view my /tmp/testq.out.ps with Ghostscript the textual part is missing. These are the filters that produce /tmp/testq.out.ps in my case: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- # grep -o 'Started filter .*' /var/log/cups/error_log Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/bannertopdf (PID 9078) Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf (PID 9079) Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops (PID 9080) Started filter pdftops (PID 9081) Started filter pstops (PID 9082) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I dissected the CUPS filtering and got /tmp/pdftops.input which is the input that /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops gets which is the output of /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf When I view the PDF file /tmp/pdftops.input with Ghostscript the textual part is there. Accordingly the textual part gets lost by /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops which is a wrapper that calls pdftops and pstops which are /usr/bin/pdftops and /usr/bin/pstops where /usr/bin/pdftops belongs to the poppler-tools RPM. Syntax Error: Couldn't find a font for '(unnamed)' ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- When I view the /tmp/pdftops.output.ps with Ghostscript the textual part is missing. I guess the root cause is related to the font for the textual part according to the pdftops Warning and Error messages but I am not at all a sufficient PDF or font expert to further analyze the root cause in /usr/bin/pdftops from the poppler-tools RPM or in cairo that had produced /tmp/pdftops.input.
