[Bug 609843] New: No Boot loader on Panel PC with CF disc
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=609843 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=609843#c0 Summary: No Boot loader on Panel PC with CF disc Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 7 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: osl2008@googlemail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 SUSE/3.5.9-0.1.1 Firefox/3.5.9 Fresh install of 11.3 m7 on Afolux AFL-08A panel PC using 8G CF card as hard disc (/dev/sda) gives no boot loader - just a 'missing operating system' message from the BIOS Tried yast bootloader from the rescue system (yes, I used mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc etc first) and various option such as re-install boot loader code, boot from MBR etc. - no change. It may be relevant that fdisk -l reports for all 3 partitions "Partition x does not end on cylinder boundary" - is this upsetting grub? Partitioning is as suggested by installer - sda1 = approx 512M swap, sda2 = approx 6G root, sda3 = approx 2G /home. Same machine worked OK for 11.3 ms6 (once bug 597299 was squashed) but this is a fresh CF card Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install on Afolux AFL-08A panel PC & 8G CF card 2. Wait for re-boot 3. read 'missing operating system' message Actual Results: 'missing operating system' Expected Results: system should start Grub -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Same with a third (fresh) CF card. The system worked fine with Milestone 6. Upgrading MS6 to MS7 using net CD, MS7 DVD image on a local FTP server and selecting 'Upgrade' in installation menu: 1. No partition offered to upgrade until I selected 'show all partitions' - then the (only) relevant one chosen. 2. Upgrade went OK until close to the end, Boot Loader installation reported failure "Error 11: Unrecognized device string" - see y2log, attached. 3. On reboot, stuck at "waiting for ... to appear" for root partition. Responding y to fall-back prompt appeared to start but then re-booted. 4. Tried reboot with serial console, cause seems to be something about a corrupted page table - see putty.log, attached. As mentioned before this unit worked quite nicely with MS6, all I've changed is the CF card and we're now back to the one that previously worked fine on MS6. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With grub in the MBR (usually discouraged, but ok for debugging),'missing operating system' is printed by the BIOS instead of jumping to the MBR. see http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/grub . I assume some piece of legacy software wants to see "cylinder boundaries" or exactly one active partition. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

BTW - this time I left all boot loader settings as defaults, not using MBR. So this looks to me like a problem with the YaST partitioner? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is rather uncommon, and additionally, yast can not easily detect BIOSes like yours. I suggest to resolve this as WORKSFORME, unless there's a reliable way to detect such a BIOS. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've tried 11.3 M7 on 5 or 6 machines now, desktops, laptop, netbook and panel PC with only this one showing the bug, I saw nothing similar on the factory ML.
