[Bug 210991] New: XEN requirements and procedures
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210991 Summary: XEN requirements and procedures Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Documentation AssignedTo: rwalter@novell.com ReportedBy: Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de QAContact: ke@novell.com The admin guide has a chapter on XEN, but there is missing some information: 1) The XEN README file states that a XEN installation defaults to VNC being used, but it lacks the details 2) The XEN module of YaST2 requires a graphical environment (in Domain 0), even though XEN User documentation suggests to have a minimal Environment in Domain 0. Furthermore the only reason for YaST requiring a graphical environment seems to be due to the fact that actual installation is performed using an xterm and _not_ VNC (as the README suggests). I think that with using VNC YaST's XEN module would work without a graphical environment. There are still too many things the user has to find out. For example: YaST knows how to build an initial bootable image using some scripts, but it's not mentioned how to do that without YaST. So a user must use YaST to create VMs. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

VNC. 2) It is possible to export YaST's display to another machine; dom0 does not need to be running X. The installer doesn't yet have a stripped-down pattern for domain 0 ("Xen" vs. "Minimal Xen") to create such an installation, but this is a feature for the future. Also, in SLES 10 and openSUSE 10.2, yast2-vm will start in text mode, although not all features work in text mode. Finally, we have a separate feature planned of making yast2-vm scriptable. The features are tracked elsewhere, so I'm marking this bug as FIXED. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210991 ------- Comment #2 from Ulrich.Windl@rz.uni-regensburg.de 2006-10-10 00:22 MST ------- The Yast installer could benefit from a radio button: "use X11 as XEN console" / "Use VNC to access XEN console" In the latter case the port number has to be made available to the user however. Most importantly of those: You cannot create a new virtual machine without X11 (local or not). For advanced users, YaST might spawn a "xm create -c vm_name" for a text-mode console. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The current "SDL" / "VNC" choice for fully virtualized is exactly this (although I would agree that X11 would be a more widely-recognized term than SDL). I've opened bug #211319 to track this terminology issue; you are CC'd on this bug.
In the latter case the port number has to be made available to the user however.
Agreed. I've opened bug #211325 to track this issue.

Bug #211334. Thanks for clarifying. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
