[Bug 205946] New: VPN - Lack of clarity of Help and apparent lack of functionality
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=205946 Summary: VPN - Lack of clarity of Help and apparent lack of functionality Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@tpg.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de There is a stark lack of information and functionality in respect to creating a VPN. The Only help references to a search on VPN provide Quote 5.10.1. Managing Internet Connections with KNetworkManager You can establish Internet connections with NetworkManager or KInternet. For a description of KInternet, see Chapter 6, Managing Internet Connections with KInternet (↑Applications). In YaST, select whether to use NetworkManager. For a list of criteria that help you to decide whether to use NetworkManager or other applications and for further information, refer to Section 18.5, “Managing Network Connections with NetworkManager” (↑Reference) and Section 30.1.2, “Integration in Changing Operating Environments” (↑Reference). When NetworkManager is enabled, you can monitor your network connections in KDE with the KNetworkManager applet. Click the KNetworkManager icon in the system tray to see a list of available network connections, such as wired, wireless, dial-up, or VPN. NetworkManager automatically chooses the best network available, but it can only automatically connect to a known network. The connection currently used is marked in the list. To activate a different connection, just click another connection. For some connections, such as WLAN, you may be prompted for additional information, such as network name, password or passphrase, and encryption details. Network connections are managed by user and the passwords are stored in KWallet. Unquote None of the references below which are hyper links in help i.e Chapter 6, Managing Internet Connections with KInternet (↑Applications Section 18.5, “Managing Network Connections with NetworkManager” Section 30.1.2, “Integration in Changing Operating Environments" Deal with functionality to providing a VPN tunnel There is great confusion created by the references in Managing Network with NetworkManager as it states Quote NetworkManager is not a suitable solution in the following cases: Your computer has a static address. You want to use more than one provider for dial-up for one interface. You want to use WPA-EAP encryption for your WLAN connection. Your computer is a router for your network. Your computer provides network services for other computers in your network, for example, it is a DHCP or DNS server. Unquote Firstly Network Manager is perfectly fine for a static IP address. Despite ALL these references there is NO information nor does there appear that the functionality exists for creating a VPN. There are several issues here is this bug which cannot be separated. 1. There needs to be written 1 and 1 only section on creating and explaining different types of VPN and 2. The user functionality to support VPN connections needs to be apparent. Currently I can find NO functional way of creating a VPN in spite and despite the help information -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Additionally, you can request a page on the opensuse wiki and work on developing such documentation yourself. I will keep you informed of the progress. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=205946 ------- Comment #2 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2006-09-30 17:36 MST ------- IF the functionality did exist to create a VPN I would gladly write about it. Part of this bug is that the functionality to create a VPN does NOT exist. This bug is in 2 parts not only is there lack of information but also not functionality to apply it to -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

As Klara is working on what documentation we have and trying to improve our offering for future releases, I will reassign this bug to her. Klara, if you can't get to it this release, please change to LATER. If the reporter is correct and some functionality is lacking, please reassign to the appropriate developer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=205946 ------- Comment #4 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2006-10-01 10:00 MST ------- Thank you Rebecca. I agree the files necessary for creating a VPN do exist in the form of PPTP and PPTPD and associated files in the /etc and /usr subdirectories, however these files are only accessible by root. I can find no form of GUI interface for creating/configuration of various types of VPN. I would suggest that if this is the case I feel it should reside, desktop independent, in YAST under Network Services perhaps....your thoughts???? kind regards Scott -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
