[Bug 803826] New: KDE 4.10 install (KR410) lacks update notification
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=803826 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=803826#c0 Summary: KDE 4.10 install (KR410) lacks update notification Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: sven.burmeister@gmx.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.26 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/26.0.1383.0 Safari/537.26 SUSE/26.0.1383.0 After switching from KR49 to KR410 available updates where not indicated in the systray anymore. I guess the same is true for the default 12.3 installation. The reason for this is that the apper plasmoid has to be installed and enabled for the systray. Hence I think the plasmoid should become a dependency of apper and enabled if installed. How does a user know how and where to install the updates? d) if one has to install the updates manually, why ship apper at all? What is the use case for an update notifier that only shows a notification for some seconds once a day? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The notifications don't go away, there is a counter in my panel that tells me I have 4 notifications - and one of them is about updates -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I would be interested in an usability guy's opinion on that. And I wonder why any/most other desktops feature a dedicated notification icon in the systray although it can be hidden in some other icon. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just got the notification about updates and the "i" disappears after 10-15 minutes after the notification was shown. And if you expand the systray you can see that the "i" shows 0 notifications. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Installing apper plasmoid is not a solution because it not give you any visual indication of the presence of updates, you have to rollover on the plasmoid icon to get infos (I don't know if the problem come from the plasmoid design or from the new default dark theme of opensuse 12.3). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
