[Bug 668039] New: umounting USB stick requires root password
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668039 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668039#c0 Summary: umounting USB stick requires root password Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=411061) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=411061) screenshot: dialog requesting root password for umount Factory + KDE:Distro:Factory from 2011-01-26 When I plugin a USB memory stick, KDE brings up the popup to mount and access it without problems. The problem is: when I want to umount the same USB stick in KDE, I get a request for the root password to umount the stick. The dialog says: Action: Umount a device mounted by another user (see the attached screenshot for all details) Just for completeness: # id uid=1000(cb) gid=100(users) Gruppen=100(users),16(dialout),17(audio),33(video),42(trusted),114(vboxusers) # mount |grep sdc /dev/sdc on /media/usbstick-opensuse type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=1000,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=lower,flush,errors=remount-ro) Expected behaviour: do _not_ ask for the root password when a user wants to umount a USB memory stick he plugged in himself. (aka "behaviour in 11.3") Rating as critical because removing a memory stick without umounting it could in theory cause data loss. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I actually cannot reproduce this with a VFAT-formatted USB thumb drive. I can mount and eject the drive without issue. Christian, could you do a clean install and try again?
A clean install isn't easy for me (because I do the betatest on my "production" laptop) Instead, I tested with a new user (created with 11.4 M5 IIRC) and got an interesting result: With the (quite) new user, I can mount and umount the USB stick without the root password... Looks like some strange setting exists somewhere in my home directory. So the questions are: - where exactly (which file) could this be? - does it affect more people that are doing upgrades and have similar config files in their home directory? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Christian, does this still occur for you on a fresh install of 11.4 final?
As I said in comment #8: This happened with my existing homedir, but never with a fresh user with a "clean" homedir. Therefore asking for a fresh install is pointless ;-)
I can't reproduce. If I don't get a reply, I'll just close the bug with WORKSFORME.
The interesting thing is that I also can't reproduce it now - umounting an USB stick or a SD card works without entering the root password. Looks like some update "accidently" fixed it :-) Therefore I'm closing the bug as fixed myself... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Martin, did you create a brand new user in your openSuSE 11.4 fresh install, or did you move the user's home directory across to the 11.4 install?
Yes, I made a brand new installation on a new partition and created a new user. I did not copy an existing home directory. However, it comes to my mind that I also have KDE3 installed in addition on all these installations. I'm using kde3pim and kdevelop3 since I find them more convenient than the KDE4 versions, for now. Is it possible this is due to an interaction between KDE4 and some KDE3 stuff? I'm on a business trip this week so I have only limited chances to do some tests. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
