The retry attempt usually works, but the continual nature of the notifications can be irritating. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Store a large number of files (large and small) on a Samba share 2. Select all of the files to be copied. 3. Copy and paste those files to a location on a Windows 7 machine Actual Results: Continual notifications appear in Windows prompting the user to retry copying due to "Too many files" being in use. Expected Results: The copy proceeds and completes silently. This issue has been confirmed in the Samba 3.4 series and details can be found at the following URL: https://bugs.launchpad.net/samba/+bug/462172 The issue was fixed in March 2010 by the Samba team, but does not appear to have made it into SuSE 11.2 yet. For your oS 11.2 case the results will get published at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:/samba:/MAINTAINED:/SLE_11... Some background information why I've not described how to do it: At the moment the vendor and patch tar balls are created with our old package source preparation tool chain. It's on out agenda to: a) move this to gitorious.org as many other openSUSE pieces are there too (like the kernel package stuff). b) make it simpler by avoiding the extra patch and vendor tar balls. I then restarted Samba. The packages you supplied did indeed appear to resolve the issue as I received no further error messages regarding "too many files in use".
