[Bug 225718] New: 82547EI fails on i865g with 4GB RAM
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225718 Summary: 82547EI fails on i865g with 4GB RAM Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: roland.kletzing@materna.de QAContact: qa@suse.de i have a problem with the onboard nic of fsc scenic w600 (i865g) system. after ram upgrade to 4gb ram (4x1gb modules), the onboard nic isn`t useable anymore. i have seen "EEPROM initialization error" or "e1000_probe: The EEPROM Checksum is not valid" - "failed with error -5" in kernel messages. i updated driver to lastest version (compiled from source), but this didn`t help. problem exists with SuSE 10.1 and SLES 10 I assume it is a SUSE related problem, because the nic works without a problem if i boot from grml live cd version 0.7 or 0.9rc1 i have started a thread at e1000 driver mailinglist (http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_id=12401) but very soon, i found that the problem seems to be related to suse - maybe some problem with handling/initializing the pci i/o region correctly!? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=225718 ------- Comment #4 from jesse.brandeburg@intel.com 2006-12-11 12:19 MST ------- It is likely when you inserted the AGP adapter it shuffled your /proc/iomem results, and you ended up with a configuration that works for the e1000. can you attach before and after results of /proc/iomem? Also, it may (unfortunately) be the case that now that you've inserted the AGP adapter when you remove it the resource allocation won't change (I don't know) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

i`d like to report that the problem doesn`t exist in 10.2 - so all is fine now.
all is fine for opensuse 10.2 ;) don`t know if you are interested in fixing this problem for SLES10 - but i have another box now with the same symptom and would like to run SLES10 on that - so i can give you further information: if there is 4GB RAM inside that box, besides the NIC also the graphics card doesn`t initialize properly - the display is completely scrambled and X doesn`t work. After inserting a pci nic and disabling the onboard nic, less memory is being recognized (3,5gb instead of 4) and the graphics card is working again. so, i assume there is something wrong with acpi/iomem/whatever in pre 2.6.18 kernels - sles10 is 2.6.16 if you interested in fixing this for sles10 and i can assist you with this, please let me know - otherwise leave this closed - it`s not a big problem for us -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
