[Bug 476282] New: autossh should be added to the 11.2 release
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=476282 Summary: autossh should be added to the 11.2 release Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Greg.Freemyer@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-1.1 Firefox/3.0.5 ssh -R creates reverse tunnels to allow remote ssh connections through firewalls / NAT devices. Unfortunately ssh -R is not very robust and in my tests would not stay up for more than a few hours. Not very acceptable if you want to leave an access path in place for occasional support needs. autossh is a ssh manager that specifically addresses the robustness issue and will kill and recreate the ssh -R tunnel anytime it fails. FYI: It is already in the OBS: http://software.opensuse.org/search?baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.1&p=1&q=autossh Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=476282 User Greg.Freemyer@gmail.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=476282#c4 --- Comment #4 from Greg Freemyer <Greg.Freemyer@gmail.com> 2009-02-16 14:29:38 MST --- I argue that although it is a small package, it is a key part of a remote admin setup. I'm not familiar with any reverse tunnel mechanism currently available to be setup in a basic OpenSUSE install. I came across autossh because I wanted to put a machine at my parent's house behind a NAT router that I could admin. I tried via ssh -R and it was a unmitigated disaster. autossh is easy to setup / use. And could likely be controlled via a simple yast2 interface. Seems like exactly the sort of remote manageability that will allow linux to grow outside the reams of Linux experts. FYI: I think Debian has it in all of their releases: http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=autossh -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
