[Bug 503071] New: Critical updates hidden behind update stack updates
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=503071 Summary: Critical updates hidden behind update stack updates Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: libzypp AssignedTo: tgoettlicher@novell.com ReportedBy: msvec@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- When there is an update stack update available and at the same time also some critical updates, they are hidden behind the first one as it gets a priority over them. Like right now, there is an update stack update available and therefore the applet displays the orange star, however the fact that there are critical updates is completely ignored and the user is left with a false feeling of safety. This is a similar problem to zypper (see bug 503068). I'd suggest to behave the same if there are any critical updates and show that to the user that this is the fact (critical updates are available, but we update the update stack first). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As far as I know it is intended that only update stack updates are reported even if other updates are available in order to ensure the correct order of updating. zypper and packagekit don't tell kupdateapplet other updates. It's up to zypp/zypper/packagekit-zypp to decide the order updates are reported. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes.

Well, I believe at least the icon should reflect that there are security patches pending, even if the order of installation says softwaremgmt patch goes first. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We could probably fairly easily change the PackageKit zypp backend to report the severity of the update stack patch as the maximum of the actual available patches. The second option of showing all the updates but preventing them from being selected and showing an explanation of why, is possible but would require some extensive, hard to maintain patching. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In the meantime we got another update applet[1] (apper) which has even more awesome features. Unfortunately issue in this bugreport is not one of them... In other words: This bug still exists in 12.1 - independent of the name of the update applet... [1] does someone have a list how the update applet in each openSUSE release was named? ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's one of the few requirements, that a pending update stack update blocks all further updates. I'm a bit reluctant to change the backend to simply send the whole list of patches because I don't know which apps (beside apper) use this call. They all would need to be adapted in order to handle the update stack patches correctly. So I'd prefer a solution where the frontend would query for 'blocked' patches if it actually wants to display more detailed info. Passing it to the apper guys. Maybe something to be discussed on opensuse-softwaremgmt as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
