As default, it was set up as outputs (for 5.1 output), thus the recording didn't work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The problem must also be addressed from a users perspective. There are currently no hints within any software (audacity, kde mixer, amixer, alsamixer) that "Smart 5.1" conflicts with "recording". There should be - a clear warning about the conflict - a checkbox to enable/disable 5.1 - enabled 5.1 must disable any capture/mic settings -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

How? On GUI?
- a checkbox to enable/disable 5.1
It's a mixer program problem. amixer / alsamixer provides it.
- enabled 5.1 must disable any capture/mic settings
Should it return an error? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well those applications opening an ALSA recording device should get an appropriate error code back and translate it to a user-friendly error message.
- a checkbox to enable/disable 5.1

Huh ? Both mixers happily allowed me to configure "mic" channels without any warning signs.
- enabled 5.1 must disable any capture/mic settings

Setting capture devices (alsamixer -> F4 -> Space) should warn if 5.1 is enabled. Enabling 5.1 should warn if capture devices are defined. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There is no such a framework. You have to define a proper error code, standardize it, then change the middle layer (e.g. PA), then application layer.
- a checkbox to enable/disable 5.1
It's a mixer program problem. amixer / alsamixer provides it.

It's a very driver-specific, thus no generic thing for a mixer app. At best, write an app-specific mixer program.
- enabled 5.1 must disable any capture/mic settings
Should it return an error?
Setting capture devices (alsamixer -> F4 -> Space) should warn if 5.1 is enabled. Enabling 5.1 should warn if capture devices are defined.
Giving a warning from the driver is the very missing piece. The driver can give at most an error with some error code. The rest is the role of the middle layer and applications. All things you described are nice, but it's very hard to implement, and it's an enhancement request. As I have no time for ALSA development in my current position, I'll have to close this. Sorry. Feel free to submit any patches to the upstream or help the development on the upsteram ML. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
