[Bug 691074] New: OpenSuSE 11.2: KDE4 does not load with nVidia 270.xx proprietary driver
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691074 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691074#c0 Summary: OpenSuSE 11.2: KDE4 does not load with nVidia 270.xx proprietary driver Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: johnroberts_abroad@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.16) Gecko/20110319 SUSE/3.6.16-0.2.1 Firefox/3.6.16 After upgrading from 260.xx nVidia drivers to 270.xx tonight, KDE4 (stock, i.e. 4.3.5 rel. 0) fails to start. Login screen appears and after entering password, I am stuck indefinitely at the progress bar. Had to finally kill X and reboot from cl. Graphic card is nVidia 7300SE based. Situation is currently rectified after uninstalling 270.xx components and reinstalling legacy 173.xx Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install proprietary 270.xx drivers through Yast2 2. reboot... 3. Actual Results: After rebooting KDE4 failed to start. I was stuck at the progress bar. Expected Results: KDE4 should have started normally (Stefan, hi. Please give some pointers as to which log files to check for errors in order to squash this one... Is there any chance that this is somewhat related to #648718 - although I'm running 64bits?) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have installed the driver with Yast2, but 173.14.28 version (listed in yast) is for G01 cards only (GeForceFX series) and my card is G02 compliant (7300 LE). So our 7300SE/LE is covered just fine. If you don't mind fiddling with it, (anyway it's very easy to switch anyhow...) give it a go and see if 173.xx works with full desktop effects (as in 11.2) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We need to clarify urgently, if this is actually a bug in the graphics driver itself or a bug synergy between the graphics driver and the desktop effects. Running OpenSuSE 11.4, 32-bit, kernel Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-default i686, KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6" Graphic card is GeForce 7200 GS Was running fine with nvidia driver 260.19.44 Did a Yast online update to nvidia 270.41.06-5.1 After reboot GRUB goes to the login window OK. With a normal log in, the screen shows only the splash image with a thin, distorted line. At that screen, ctrl+alt+del, then down arrow, then enter does a proper system halt, although nothing changes on the screen during the keystrokes. Desktop effects were always enabled. I went back to NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.44.run from the nvidia site. Today I tried NVIDIA-Linux-x86-270.41.19.run but had the same login problem. I went back to 260.19.44, disabled desktop effects, and then installed 270.41.19. That works OK now that desktop effects are off. Then go to Systemsettings/Effects and tab advanced. Her you must disable direct rendering and set composite-type to OpenGl. Then klick button execute. Now you can enable the effects. This is done with manual install the new driver 275.09.07. Perhaps it does go with driver from repository. In any case though, such issues have been especially crippling, since users are left with no options other than paying for new hardware (not unlike Microsoft's legacy...), accepting a malfunctioning OS or abandoning OpenSUSE all together. This is finally solved with the official release of the 290.10-13.1 nVidia driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
