[Bug 283103] New: Changing brightness with DELL laptop hotkeys is broken
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=283103 Summary: Changing brightness with DELL laptop hotkeys is broken Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: juan.hoyosr@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop w/ GNOME as desktop env. The brightness cannot be changed by the destined hotkeys (Fn+Up/Down) since first installation. Other hotkeys for Suspend, Hibernate, Volume and Eject work fine. Don't know if is just coincidence, but in Control Panel / Keyboard shortcuts one can find the working hotkeys options. Brightness is never a choice. Christopher, backlight brightness is not handled by the operating system. It should work even with no OS running. With the 2.1.0 BIOS it is not working anymore in Linux (don't know why), maybe just in the bootloader (worked for me in GRUB). The solution is to downgrade your bios to the 1.7.0 version.
According to the above your BIOS version might be of interest. But just wait a little for the suse-experts they probably know better what to try. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I made a clean 10.3 installation, and it didn't worked. Searching for related stories I found that Ubuntu 7.10 has the same problem with this notebook due to the BIOS version. See the coments on http://www.ubuntu1501.com/2007/09/ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon-beta-overview.html When I initially reported the problem I had the BIOS v1.7 Currently I don't have the knowledge to understand why, the Brightness hotkey works with Vista and not with OpenSuSE (or any other distro including the BIOS version). If you could redirect me to some info. It'll be appreciated. Hope we can fix it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It seems that this is covered by a feature request we're about to implement for upcoming versions of openSUSE (FATE #302883: Implement Vista compatible video and brightness functionality as defined by the latest ACPI specification) I'm closing this as LATER as it is unlikely that this will be backported for 10.3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then start X by switching into runlevel 5: It doesn't work anymore? Which X driver do you use? Please try the next 11.1 Beta release and open a new bug if you still should have problems. The reason why this took so long is that ThinkPads showed regressions which were not easy to resolve. The patchset is too big and will not be backported, therefore I keep it won't fix. Dell is also somewhat special and giving this a test before the final 11.1 comes out and we can still fix things is really worth it. It might be that another fix must be backported for Dell or Hal userspace tools which cannot be handled in the kernel. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
