[Bug 731896] New: In openSUSE 12.1 exiting from acroread 9.4.2-3 instead of killing process acroread causes 100% of cpu use
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731896 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731896#c0 Summary: In openSUSE 12.1 exiting from acroread 9.4.2-3 instead of killing process acroread causes 100% of cpu use Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: almorales@cableonline.com.mx QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 When you exit from acroread in openSUSE 12.1 64 bit you can see that the acroread 9.4.2-3 process is still there using 100% of cpu use. If you are not aware of this situation and run one more acroread command and then exit, you will have two acroread processes using all the cpu capacity. The same happen with acroread installed with "AdbeRdr9.4.6-1_i486linux_enu.tar.bz2". Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.run acroread 2.exit from acroread 3. Actual Results: acroread is still there using 100 % of the cpu. Expected Results: acroread process killed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Same version of acroread. Would like to add that a normal "sigterm" signal from "top" or from a terminal will not kill the process. I kill it with "killall acroread -s KILL" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is there perhaps another plugin to see PDFs inside, embedded to Firefox? Acroread also often only shows a black page instead of the PDF-content - this has been an issue already before 12.1 distro. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731896 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731896#c4 --- Comment #4 from Ronnie Bailey <purevw@wtxs.net> 2011-11-23 20:09:03 UTC --- Adobe Reader has never played well with Firefox. What I do is get the Firefox plugin "pdf download". It will give you the option to either open it in Firefox, open it in an acroread window outside of Firefox (which works well), or simply save it to a folder so you can open it manually. Even without the plugin, you can simply right click on the link and choose "Save Link As" and download it that way. I think for now, I will just download everything and use "ocular" to view or print as needed. It is a good general pdf viewer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In answer to comment 4, this has nothing to do with Firefox. Acroread uses 100% of the CPU when closed, independently from how it is executed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is independent from firefox or any other program. I also installed acroread versions 9.4.6 and 8.1.7 from www.adobe.com The problem remains. The process hangs in the binary ~/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread On opensuse 11.4 both versions are working properly. Is it possible that acroread is not made for Linux kernel 3.x? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731896 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731896#c8 --- Comment #8 from Ulrich Hiller <hiller@mpia-hd.mpg.de> 2011-12-02 08:47:00 UTC --- In the meantime I had the opportunity to test it on an opensuse 12.1 32bit system: Same result: When I exit, the acroread window shuts, but the acroread process remains. I could also test it on an ubuntu 11.10 32bit system (kernel 3.0) with acroread 9.4.6 . There it behaves normal: All acroread processes shut down as they should when i do an exit. In comment #7 i still thought it is an adobe problem, but now, looking at ubuntu, i think there must be something fixed in opensuse. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
