I am experiencing exactly the same problem on a Gateway Laptop MX6923B (Core Duo T2500) also with an 945GM graphics card using OpenSuse 10.1. I'm happy to test any new kernels and/or Xorg releases to troubleshoot this as I bought this laptop with this particular use in mind.
