It does not happen for another user. So I guess the effect may be related to the use of some desktop effect. When the screen is in that state, "zapping the server" does not help, just as Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not cleanly restore a text console (If started with "vga=normal" the screen is still graphics, but divided into four quarters, where the above two of them resemble the text console's content). The only thing you can do then is to enter some commands blindly (to reboot). Having investigated the Xorg's log a bit, I found some astonishing messages, one of them not knowing the vendor ID of Nvidia (even though "lspci" knows the card). However there are no real error messages in the log. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. The quickest solution to your user's problem is to remove his gnome configuration files and reconfigure his desktop from scratch on 11.1 -- backing them up first just in case of course. If his preferences then generate the same problem you have a better case for a bug in X (or gnome). But in the absence of an open source X server driver with the same bug I suspect that openSUSE would be justified in having you direct your bug to Nvidia since they no longer track closed source driver bugs. During the system update the proprietary NVIDIA driver gets uninstalled and configuration changed to nv driver, which provides no 3D acceleration. Obviously GNOME ignores this change. The other thing is that the user in question could log in after the upgrade without a problem; the problem occurred after some settings were changed. Regarding the suggestion to remove all gnome configuration: While technically valid, this means that the settings of ALL GNOME applications would be lost which is completely unacceptable from a user's point of view. (Isn't GNOME about usability and stability?) Unrelated to those GNOME issues, there is an issue that Crtl+ALt+F1 fails to work once the X server is in the state described, so I think it's an issue with X11 (and/or related infrastructure). I mean: How many graphics chip vendors are around? The difference to the machine with the Nvidia card is that using Ctrl+Alt+F1 works fine.
